Toddler who is ALWAYS thirsty...started to get concerned

My 18 mo. is ALWAYS thirsty. He drinks probably 4 or 5 sippy cups a day of water/juice plus maybe a bottle or two of milk. The past few weeks he has been waking up and wanting a drink during the night.

It seems silly to worry about but diabetes (juvenile and type 2) run in my Dad's side of the family. My father himself is a diabetic. One of the tell tale signs is excessive thirst. Is it even possible for an 18 mo. old to be at risk for diabetes? Chat Icon

Of course I am going to ask my ped but just wondering if anyone has any experience or advice? Maybe he just drinks alot and there is nothing more to it Chat Icon

Lucas drank a lot when he was younger...even now he'll ask for a drink before he'll ask for food.

Some of it was/is habit and also boredom. On the flip side...Lucas has never been dehydrated. When he was sick he was always fine in that regard because the boy drinks a lot.

Definitely something to bring up to the ped but I think it's okay. Chat Icon

I just had my sons urine tested because I had the same concerns. It was negative though :) Good luck!

I do know it is possible for young kids to get juvenile diabetes- my friend's son got diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when he was around 1 year old. He was wetting through diapers all the time, drinking a lot, and lost weight, and then started vomiting and got pretty sick. Definitely call your pediatrician!!! They can test him pretty easily.

Also, there are other reasons me might be thirsty- maybe he likes the juice? or sweats a lot? Maybe its a phase, and he just likes drinking. But definitely call so you can put your mind at ease.

I would call and get him checked...if for nothing, at least peace of mind. Chat Icon

He urinates ALOT. His diapers are always full, but it's because he drinks so much. But he isn't losing any weight which usually accompanies the excessive thirst and sometimes hunger.

I have a script for blood work so I will double check that it includes checking his sugar levels.

I try not to put a lot of juice in his cups, it's usually mostly water.

My mom was always getting me tested as a child and I still do to this day because it is rampant in my fathers side. I would just hate to see my little guy go through it Chat Icon
