Toddler crying/ scared all time?help!!

My 2 yo ds is a major scaredy cat! We can not go anywhere lately without a melt down. He cries and says he wants to go home. Fun places like hicks, gymboree, etc. Even the gas station and a public restroom! Is this normal toddler fears? Should I call the dr? he is becoming completely afraid to be without me but we need to leave the house! Help I'm losing it.

I can sympathize with you. My friend is going through something very similar. She has 26 month old twins (girl/boy) and they are night and day. Her daughter is outgoing, adventurous and loves to try and do new things whereas her son breaks down to the point of vomiting. He was always the “sensitive” kid, but lately it has gotten worse and to the point of affecting his daily activities. He cant go in elevators, he freaks out when people come to visit, strangers scare him, etc. It also has been impacting his sister who seems to always miss out because they are constantly having to leave places. She had him evaluated by a psychologist through EI and unfortunately he said at this age there is not much you can do (therapy wise) if there are no other developmental issues. They either grow out of it or they don’t. He encouraged her to continue doing what she was doing, which was being there if he needed some comfort but not “coddling” him, not sheltering him from the things that give him anxiety but to try and show him that there is nothing to be scared of, aka, not leaving a place because he is having a melt down. To the last one, my friend thinks easier said then done, especially when he throws up and needs to be changed. So, I guess my advice is, if you want, call up EI and ask for him to be evaluated. It is free and if he does not qualify for any type of services, at the very least they can give you some “professional” coping advice. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Read the Out of Sync Child and see if it applies to your ds. Your ds may have some sensory issues. A knowledgeable OT can really help him with it. Being able to regulate your sensory system is a hard task at 2 years old.

Thanks for the replies. What type of sensory issues could he have? He has no developmental issues and seems very smart but extremely sensitive. Now I am really getting worried. I never thiught it would be something like that. Boo.

I was just about to say this...it seems like he may be overwhelmed by his environment other than his house due to some sensory issues. DH cousin's son has Delayed Sensory Integration and exhibits some of the behaviors you mentioned. I would definitely speak to the doctor and have him evaluated.

I agree with possible sensory issues. He doesn't have to have developmental delays to have it.
