Toddler Clothing Size

I will buy ahead for DD when things are on sale. She's 18 mos now so we will soon be out of the 18-24 mo stage.

How do I buy ahead from here on out size-wise? For example, if I want to buy her some of the Valentine's Day stuff that will go on sale soon for next year when she'll be 2 1/2, what size? 2T? 3T? Thanks!

I think it's hard at that age. How has she been size wise? On track, ahead, behind? I would say at least a 3t for next year but for all you know she could need 4t by then. Happened with DD. As an infant and young toddler always wore the size for her age or a size smaller. Once she turned 3, she shot up and is now in 5t.

ETA: I think you have a little more wiggle room with girls, like something that is supposed to be a dress can easily become a cute long top with leggings. I do that a lot with her clothes too to get me to the next season.

Re: Toddler Clothing Size

2t and 24 months are the same belly size but the length can be the same to about an inch difference depending upon the brand. My son has consistently needed one size larger than his age and he has consistently gone up a size every February. My daughter wears the same size as her age for pants but generally needs longer shirts for her arm length.

I don't have a girl but my son is 2.5 and size 3T shirts fit him perfectly, 2T pants fit him better since the 3T pants sometimes can be a little bit big.

This. our nephew was in 2T by 1 year, and 3T by 15 months, and 4T by 18 months. He's HUGE! But, then again, his father is 6'4".

Holy cow! My DH is 6'7" and my DS is 16m and just starting to hit 24m clothing.

Yup. He'll be 3 in September and is the size of a 5 year old, poor kid. Everyone thinks he's so much older than he really is and expects him to behave that way. He definitely slowed down in the growth once he hit 2 years old, though. It was CRAZY to watch, especially since he was just a little bigger at birth than my 4 week premie DS.

I always buy ahead! I considered 2t to be the next size after 24mos. My dd is average sized and she is 2.5 years and wears a 3t. I already bought her summer stuff in 4t. Last summer she just got into 2t and so I am hoping I'll be able to squeeze her into some shorts that were big esp bc she won't have a diaper.

DS was always ahead for his age but DD is always at her age or even smaller as she has no waist at all. She still fits in 6-12 month skirts with leggings at nearly 2. I think she will even fit in last years dresses this rear but with leggings. During winter though as she is tall she is in 2T since 18months.

hard to judge. My dd is tall and skinny. I'm doing 2T tops and 2T bottoms now but buying ahead I'm doing 3t. I'm stumped for summer but I figure longer is better when it comes to tops so I go up a size to 3t but 3t bottoms would fall off of her. I wanted to buy ahead for next winter but thought it would be a waste.

Re: Toddler Clothing Size

If she is going to be 2.5 I say play it safe and buy the 3T. If it is a little big, its not a big deal. Like other posters said it really depends on how she has typically grown. I am buying my dd 4T for next year, since she is 3, but pant wise she will probably still be in 3T. She is small weight wise. My ds on the other hand is 8 months and in size 18 months, so I have no idea how I will shop ahead for him.

Its hard to say because kids grow at different rates. My dd is 2 yrs and 4 months old right now and she's been wearing size 4T for a few months already. But she's bye tall for her age (always in the 95th percentile for height at her checkups).

I'd like to buy ahead for next year but I really cannot gauge what size she'll be. Right now at 11.5m, she's in mostly 9 month, can still fit into some 6-9, but can also fit in some 9-12 and a few 12m clothes. She didn't get out of NB clothes til 10w! At this rate, she might be in 18m in a year. Or she could have a growth spurt and be in 24m. So as much as I'd like to buy everything while it's on sale, I'm just going to wait.

Re: Toddler Clothing Size

Hard to say. I usually buy their size now but in the cheaper brands 2t is getting tight or short on my one dd. She's in 2t and almost 2.5 and although she's skinny she's had a growth spurt. I've been buying 3 t for summer/fall with 3t adjustable skinny jeans sinse she needs length.

I always buy ahead. When in doubt, size up. They can just wear the clothes a little bit longer.

I would go with 3T and only buy if it's super cheap and you won't be out much on the off chance it's too small already. I buy ahead all the time and it's always worked out for me but I'm not sure I'd do it for something so specific like a holiday.

Chat Icon I agree. I just bought DS two winter coats on clearance in 5T which I'm hoping he'll be able to use for the next few years... he's only in 2T now (sometimes 3T) but honestly the 5T doesn't look that big! And hoping I can get a few years' use out of it.

Re: Toddler Clothing Size

I always buy ahead because my kids are slow growers/peanuts and it has been easy for me to predict their size. DS1 is 6 years old and wears 5T and 5/6 clothes. DS2 is 2.5 years old and is in 2T.

My DD is on the small side compared to other kids her age, she is 2.5 years old and in 2T. I'm guessing around 3 she will move on to 3T.
