I have the classic but the trick that helps me is to loosen the side strap, then click the back buckle, then tighten the side. Much easier to reach the back that way.
When in doubt, YouTube videos helped me with my carriers much more than the instructions!

tips on using the ergobaby
I have short arms and I can't use it without DH's help. My arms just don't move that way.

I have the regular ergo (cant forward face) so I don't know how different they are. Here's what I do when I wear DD facing in on my front. 1) loosen arm straps all the way 2) clip the back clip that connects the 2 arm straps 3) I put the Ergo on without the baby in it. 4) Slide DD in from the top. B/c the arm straps are loose there's more than enough room to slide her in. Grab the top and bounce a few times to ensure a good "seat" for DD. 5) Reach right back and pull the arm straps tighter 1 at a time.
Does that make sense??

Re: tips on using the ergobaby
Definitely YouTube videos. That's how I figured out how to back carry on my own.
