Tipping for take out?
This question is prompted by something I heard on the radio today...
Do you tip when you get take out?
To answer my own question, we typically view take out as being less expensive because we DON'T have to tip; however, we'll throw in the occasional few dollars if we know the person had to do a lot of prep work (e.g., for a big order).
On the radio, one person said it was "standard" to tip 10% for takeout (as opposed to the usual 20% for waiter/waitress service).
What do you think?

Re: Tipping for take out?
I will tip sometimes. Like you said, if it was a big or complicated order, a busy holiday, or something like that.
Most of the time I don't tip though. The reason I got up off my butt to go pickup the food myself is usually because I didn't want to pay the delivery charge and tip in the first place.

I tip for take out sometimes, depending on the prep involved. Are there a lot of condiments, extras like pickles that have to be packed..etc..

Re: Tipping for take out?
I would never tip for take out - the cooks are the ones preparing the food. they receive a nice salary. I think we are becoming an over tipping society. Way to many tip cups everywhere.

Re: Tipping for take out?
I tip for take out - approx 15%
They are still taking my order, submitting it to the kitchen, packing it up & presenting it to me. That's pretty much what happens when I sit there & eat. The bill is less since there are no drinks therefore the tip is less $$ wise.

I tip for everything...seriously...everything...
Take out is the same I would tip at the venue - at least 20%.
Pizza Pie being delivered ($12) - I'll give the guy $15.

I tip for takeout too. For us, it depends on how far the guy had to come from.

I always tip for delivery. Never for just "take-out".
If I have Chinese delivered, I always tip. If I go and pick up a pizza, never tip.

Re: Tipping for take out?
I never tip for take out. The same people would be preparing the food if I were getting delivery (for which I obviously tip) and wouldn't get tipped then, regardless of how large or complicated the order was. Same if I am eating in the restaurant. I don't see tipping as necessary for take out, and I consider myself a pretty generous tipper most of the time. (To be honest, I think the tip line is there on the receipt just b/c all receipts in the restaurant have a tip line, not because one is expected for take out...)

If it's a large order or I'm a PITA about it (this on the side, extra this bla bla) then I tip but normally no.
ETA: I always tip delivery.

Re: Tipping for take out?
I learned years ago that if you get takeout from a diner you should tip the waitress, however I have never carried that through to other places where I pickup

ITA with this - maybe it's wrong but tipping is optional anyway, no?

I do usually tip. I don't tip in places like Dunkin Donuts or McDonalds because those employees are paid at least min. wage.
I quoted this because the statement is not true. In many restaurants, the cooks may cook the food but it is a waitress/waiter who packs up your food and gets the whole order together. Waitresses/Waiters typically get about $2.50 an hour.

Re: Tipping for take out?
I only tip for takeout if its curbside service from cheesecake factory or outback, etc. When I was working, I would tip at my normal dunkin donuts because they knew what I was getting and had it ready almost as soon as I walked in the door. I don't tip for picking up pizza or chinese takeout

ditto. if i called in an order and i go down there to pick it up, why do i have to tip you? you put it in the bag...i should give you an extra $3 to do your job? i always tip 20% when i sit down and eat because that waiter/waitress is spending time taking our order, bringing our drinks and food, getting other things we need and just being attentive in general. i dont think putting the food in the bags deserve the same kind of praise. Just my opinion.

Re: Tipping for take out?
Pizza is a different story-they slap it in a box and its done. I used to waitress at an Italian restaurant and basically the wait staff would have to take time away from ther tables to cover all th containers, put in the appropriate sides, bread, etc. This was a KILLER whne you were busy and sometimes I would lose tips on my regular tables because I was so busy weith take out.
I always tip for takeout-not a percentage but a couple of bucks. Its not going to kill me.

Re: Tipping for take out?
Only time I ever used to tip for takeout was at Ground Round when the bartender had to take time out of tending bar to get me my order and ring me up.
