Time out chair or pad?
Dd is testing us. She understands "no" and smiles and does things anyway.
She is almost 22 months. What type of chair or pad can I use for timeouts?
TIA

Time out chair or pad?
I didnt use one.
I used a place that was safe and lackluster. So for us it was the alcove next to our entry way that led to the washer/dryer room and closet. She sat facing our closet (or we tried). We kept putting her back there. She got angry and would cry harder. But it was time out. Other times she was put behind the sofa (so we could see her in the dining room) our sofa say in the middle of our living room (not against a wall) and there was about 4feet of open space behind it (so you could walk all the way around our couch unhindered). We never kept anything back there since it was a walk way around the room without blocking the TV but lead to the hall for the rooms and the back door to the porch. So that was her time out area if we were eating. We didn't put her in her room for time outs until later.
Time outs were also out and about. So in the mall on the floor facing a window to a store. I can live with a little dirt. Facing the emptiness of a restaurant in her highchair (but still seated with us at the table), sitting in the booth facing the window/wall if we were in one, on a chair at the end of an aisle in Costco, etc..
Bascially anywhere BORING and unfun, within sight that we could see her but she didn't face us, safe from her tossing herself back in a tantrum and hurting herself, safe from anything else that may hurt her and generally a place that wouldn't draw too much attention as she cried or yells at us "NO!" etc.
But that's just us. I never let her wait for time outs. Our policy is every action has an immediate reaction. So none of the 'wait until you get home' idea. She got time out immediately after the 'crime' if you will.
But to be honest, she figured it out quick and we don't threaten with "do you want time out" to make her do something. We only say the T.O. words if she's beyond reasoning and its is pretty much garaunteed that's where she's going. After awhile she learned and yes, she'd shape up BEFORE T.O.s (surprised us but we kept our word).
She hasn't been in time out for a very long time now. I think around 3 or so she stopped needing them. We'd talk it out. She knew she'd messed up. At 3 she pretty much told *US* she was going to time out or 'thinking time'. She'd just walk off in a huff "I need thinking time" well ok then. Or if she was mad at us she'd put *US* in time out (which was fine by us!).

Time out chair or pad?
Emmy actually picked her spot lol. She stand in front of her changing table, and at my mom's she stands in her bedroom doorway. I don't know why since I never wanted her bedroom to be a timeout place, but that was where she went when we started it at a young age. We tried the kitchen by the sink and she just laughed. One time she heard me say Time Out and theats when she ran to her room. The funny thing is now when she gets REALLY mad she will put herself into time out lol. Do what feels right for both of you, but you don't need anything special. I also wanted to add she plays by her table and stores her toys in it so she isn't afraid of it or sad in her room, and she doesn't play in TO either. She just stands there.

Time out chair or pad?
I picked a spot - by the stairs in the corner. If we were out, anyplace was a TO spot. I don't think it should be in the bedroom b/c you don't want a bedroom to be associated with punishment b/c then you might have trouble getting DC to sleep.

Re: Time out chair or pad?
I have to be honest... for us,nothing works except the crib. She won't stay in a spot or on a chair. She will get up and fling that chair or whatever across the room if she is having a tantrum. My DD's tantrums are NOT for the faint of heart- trust me. I have been told to keep putting her back in the corner or on the chair, or whatever, but trust me, it gets so bad that one of us can get hurt- and I am not exergerating or being dramatic when I say that. She flails so bad, throws things, has banged her head on the wall... it jsut doesn't work.
So time outs are in the crib... the only true place she can be confined.
And it works for us.
