Thunder is really sick - Update #3
Without going into too much detail... we knew something was really wrong with Thunder. He looked good, acted fine and was just as loveable and playful as ever... but he wasn't eating. And we noticed he was visibly losing weight. We took him to the doctor. They gave him fluid therapy and checked for parasites. Nothing. So they took blood and gave him an X-ray. X-ray showed nothing. Blood came back this morning and his kidneys are failing.
We don't know why - the doc doesn't seem to know why either. His gums are good, his coat his healthy, his eyes are bright, he's playful... it's just totally out of left field.
He is in the hospital on fluid therapy and IV antibiotics for 3 days. There are 3 possible outcomes:
1. He has an acute case of kidney failure and the antibiotics cure it and then he gets better after 3 days and we live happily ever after.
2. He has a chronic case of kidney failure, he gets better after 3 days.. but then gets bad again. He'd need a specialist and regular treatments to prolong his life with no guarantee toward the quality of his life or how long he would live.. 3 days, 3 months, 3 years, 10 years...
3. He has an acute case of kidney failure, antibiotics don't help and he gets worse and we will be faced with the decision to euthanize him or keep him in the hospital until he dies 'naturally'.
Please pray that scenario number one is the one that plays out. Please.
UPDATE 1: The goal for yesterday was to make sure that he didn't vomit. When we called to check on him last night, he had passed that checkpoint.
The goal for this morning was to see if he would eat on his own and hold down the food and water. He did both of these things.
They said we should not come visit him because he will get excited and think that he is going to be coming home... and then he will be depressed when we leave him. So we will not see him until Monday.
Tomorrow is critical... he needs to have another blood test. And then we will know if his levels are getting better or worse.

Update #2:
The doctor said his levels are coming down - SIGNIFICANT improvement is shown in the kidney function - but it's still not normal.
He believes that Thunder has/had Leptospirosis. It's hard to detect until it has gone REALLY bad. He is still in the hospital and we are advised not to visit him because seeing us and not coming home will be depressing for him.
He is also eating - and not just eating, but eating KD food that most dogs won't touch. So he's doing better so far... If his kidneys are in normal range tomorrow we can bring him home.
My 7 year old was praying yesterday and I heard him say "Please let Thunder get better. If he does come home than I will promise not to ask Santa for anything else for Christmas. Except a bionicam" He is TOTALLY getting a Bionicam.
Update #3: Thunder's numbers are currently in 'normal range' - they are still a little on the higher end of normal but he was good enough to come home!
Rob said the minute Thunder saw him - he jumped ALL over him kissing him. Then he practically pulled him out of the vet's office. He did NOT want to stay there!
As soon as he got home he ran around the yard peeing everywhere. Now he is just relaxing in the kitchen.
The doc said he isn't COMPLETELY out of the woods. He will need to switch to 'Senior' dog food for the next few weeks because it has less protein and will help his kidneys function more optimally. Also - no people food - not even plain beef, chicken or fish. And no dog treats for a while.
We will bring him back at the end of next week to have another CBC done. So we'll keep praying that his next blood workup is even better than current!

Wow!! You are so lucky you got the Lepto in time....Thank God your vet knew what to look for and acted on it right away. It is a very serious virus/disease....

See... that's the problem... we don't know if we got it in time. His kidney function levels were insanely high. They are still high and we don't know if he has permanent kidney damage or not. We are hoping that whatever is there is reversible.
