threenager in the house
DS is starting to throw a lot of tantrums lately and I've tried to be patient, tried to talk to him but at some points he'll just keep insisting on his own way and then will scream. DS is usually a very sweet, caring boy but recently i don't know what's gotten over him. anyone else experience this with your dc at this age? how did you talk to your dc? did it pass?

Yes and we are still going through it. I have twins and although my daughter has her tantrum moments but my son is far worse. The tantrums are outrageous. They turned 4 in December and it's been like this since about 3.5. I'm waiting for it to pass like everyone says it does.

Def the age. Dd was an angel until she was just about 3. She will be 4 in just over a week, still going on, but not as bad. Some days I want to strangle myself.

DD will be 3 this week and for the most part I think she's getting a little better. I just try to be really consistent in letting her know she won't get things by yelling or crying. If she doesn't ask for something nicely I remind her to ask it the right way before she gets it. If the answer is no she sometimes refuses to take no for an answer so I either threaten time out or taking something away- usually going somewhere or doing something fun she won't want to miss. Giving choices works a lot of times too. You can pick between these two or three things and that's it. Sometimes I tell her it's one option or nothing at all. I do find if shhe's tired it's 100 times worse and everything sends her in tears so in those cases we may go out since she tends to do better out of the house or I let her watch a movie and it's definitely an early bedtime night. It's definitely like dealing with a very hormonal person who can't handle their emotions.

Re: threenager in the house
You have described my 3.5 year old DS. It's like aliens have taken over. He is defiant and fresh. he especially enjoys throwing his tantrums when I need to get out the door in the morning...ripping his shoes off, refusing to get dressed, screaming he wants candy for breakfast, etc. it's total chaos. There are days that I totally get why people beat their kids. I don't condone it, but I get it. Its a very trying age. I hope the aliens return my sweet little boy some day!

Re: threenager in the house
My DD is like this! My nephews never really throw fits, they are more whiners, and then there is DD. She is always throwing tantrums. We try to tell her that she needs to ask for things in a calm voice if she wants them, and that she won't get her way with tantrums, but she still throws them. She is fighting naps now too (3.5yo) so the overtired issue is not helping matters only.
I am hoping she will snap out of it soon (and also snap out of the picky eater thing....UGH!)

My 3 year old does this too. My older son wasn't quite as bad but, we've had a rough time with DS 2.
I don't give in to what he's requesting, make sure he's in a safe place, and walk away and let him continue until he's done.
It's quite normal and a way for them to release their frustrations. Even though they can talk now - they still aren't able to express their feelings appropriately (ie - instead of saying mommy, I'm mad that I can't have M&Ms for breakfast - they kick, scream and throw things....)
I do find my son is a lot more unbearable though when his ears are bothering him. He's very prone to ear infections and he has less patience for anything if they are bothering him.
