Those With Tenants ....

That rent an apartment that is in your house..do you salt the stairs, etc. or is it your tenant's responsibility?

I think it's the land lord's responsibiity to be sure they are salted. If it's an absentee landlord, they should have preset arrangements for things like this - whether it's working something out with the tenant, a service, etc.

Re: Those With Tenants ....

It's the landlord's responsibility.

we don't live in our NY house but have it rented out and we made sure to have a provision on the lease that stated that they (the tenants) were solely responsible for any and all upkeep/maintenance, including lawn care, removal of any debris/rubbish and removal of snow/application of salt.

It's the landlord's responsibility, you also have to shovel for the tenant.

I lived in an apt with an absentee landlord and was told before we moved in that we were responsible to shovel.

I don't have a lease that's why I was asking...to see what the "norm" is.

I've always lived in a development and management took care of it. This time around I live in an apt in a house, the LL lives upstairs. I have many concrete steps which were very slippery this morning, as was the entire walk and I was quite surprised he didn't at least salt and thankfully I didn't slip with the baby.

landlord...
we rent an apartment in our house and we have always salted but I know sometimes if DH has gotten home late or we were away we leave the shovel and salt in the shed and the tenants have shoveled and salted

Re: Those With Tenants ....

my landlord rarely does this and he lives downstairs. granted he is 70-something years old. i still think he should then hire someone to take care of it. my stairs, walkway and the driveway were a mess this morning. he left a box of ice melt outside for meChat Icon

Well at least you got that! I was chipping away at the ice with my FOOT! Chat Icon My LL is a "handyman" when it comes to house projects so he is able bodied enough to salt and shovel. I think he's mad though that *I* got mad about my plumbing breaking yet AGAIN this past week Chat Icon

It's the landlords responsibility - but - my tenants are so great - and if they are home before my DH gets in from work they will do it! Chat Icon

he only left it for us because the stuff we bought ourselves last year was "ruining the walkway" or so he says. if your LL is able bodied, he should be out there doing it for you, whether he's mad or not. i dread the snow for this very reason!!

It should be the landlords responsibility!
And all my past landlords would take care of it and even help me shovel my car out, since I had no shovel.

However my most recent landlord made us shovel.

God forbid I had fallen.....They'd be living in the apartment and we'd be in the main house!Chat Icon

Sounds like my old ll in Huntington.

He lived there and had another tenant above us.....we ALWAYS had to shovel and it was expected of us.

Now as homeowners, we have a tenant and we would never think of asking him to do it It's our responsibility.

Re: Those With Tenants ....

My DH usually does it but sometimes he works long hours and just doesn't get a chance to. We do leave a huge bucket of salt for our tenants so that they can do it if we can't.

Re: Those With Tenants ....

Our landlord lives below us. He is responsible for salting and shoveling. DH will help him if he needs it though.
