Those with multiple cats
So my cute little adorable kitten is 6 months old and I would love to get her a friend to play with (mommy guilt for leaving her alone all day while we're at work). My DH is adamently opposed. He believes that getting another kitten will change the disposition of Sushi and make her a B!tch and cause her to be jealous and spiteful. Is this true? I have heard that sometimes cats dont like other cats but to become spitefull and change her personality? I would likely get another kitten that was younger than her. Any insight you can give is greatly appreciated!

Re: Those with multiple cats
my vet says as long as they are younger it's fine
we got pokey 2 years ago- he was 7
we felt he was lonely and needed a friend
so we got a kitten for him
it was LOVE at first site- she even tried to nurse off of HIM and he didn't stop her
I come home and they are sleeping together- I think it's great to have 2

Re: Those with multiple cats
I completely disagree with your DH, respectfully. She is only 6 months old, now is the perfect time to get her a sibling which is around her age to play with, they will have a great time together. I think if you got one alot older than her it might cause a problem.
FYI...I used to have 2 cats - one I got when she was 3 years old - when she was 10 years old I brought home a kitten. Usually not recommended. Well, it turned out great. The older cat had settled into "middle age" and was a little lazy. Bringing home the kitten invigorated her...they played..she had to be on her toes, so to speak. DH and I thought it made her "younger". If it had not been for that stupid Menu Foods which was contaminated, she would probably still be alive (she was 17 when she died).

Re: Those with multiple cats
If you ARE going to get another cat, now is the time (while she is young). I've seen some older cats have a very hard time adjusting, but kittens are pretty resilient -- and she'd probably love a buddy. I would agree with you - get a younger kitten, preferably already fixed.
We have two male kittens, but we adopted them together... We think they were probably littermates.

Thank you for all of your responses. I am copying them and forwarding to my DH for his reading pleasure. Lets see what other lame excuse he comes up with next

Re: Those with multiple cats
well we have two cats, but they are sisters and we adopted them together because the vet said it'd be bad to seperate... I'm sure as long as they are young its fine. I would think an older cat would be more upset at a new addition as opposed to a kitten

Re: Those with multiple cats
Now is definately the time to introduce a new kitten to your kitten.
When our cat was around 8 months old - my MIL adopted a new kitten. Since she travels alot we babysit the kitten alot. It's over year now - and even though they don't live together - they LOVE to see each other...they are always playing with one another and sleep near one another.
DH gets jealous when his mother's cat is here - because Oscar doesn't pay any attention to him

Re: Those with multiple cats
If you do get a second kitten, I can recommend a great shelter.
