those who researched cord blood banking???
Is it true that Viacord has the only system where the bag is FDA approved as sterile for C-sections? They seem to use funny wording to explain this and I am wondering if they want to appear to be something they aren't.
We're fairly certain we are going to bank cord blood. DH asked his endocrinoligist about possible uses of cord blood for treating diabetes in the future. I wouldn't say that the doctor was encouraging but he commented that if you don't have it, you can't use it. If we do come to a point where it is discovered to be useful in a larger variery of diseases, who is to say what will be left be in the public banks? If DH did not have juvenile diabetes, we would probably skip this. But we need to invest in even the slightest possiblity of a cure. And so I have another thing to decide--which company?!
ETA: I am having a planned C-section, so it is crucial for me to know about which company is best for that.

we are going with cbr. i don't know anything about the c-section bag, but i don't really get it either. whether you have a c-section or not, don't they take the cord blood from the cord, right after birth? either way you birth, the baby comes out with the cord. i don't understand. maybe they can explain that more.
we debated a lot if we should bank. i wanted to donote to the public bank, but unfortunately only certain hospitals do public bank donation and winthrop isn't one of the.
honestly, we went with cbr, because they were slightly less $$$ (we have to bank 2) and they were a little more knowledgable with their answers. both companies were pretty pushy.
good luck, let me know the answer to that c-section bag thing.

We signed up with ViaCord for exactly this reason - they are the ONLY private cord blood bank with FDA-approved procedures for cord blood collection for C-sections. I am hoping not to have a C but you never know.
I also am encouraged by the fact that my $$ will also be going into research, not just storage. I believe that the possibilities for cures with cord blood are increasing exponentially, and although today what you can get from a public bank can help with what it is used for now, who is to say that in 2, 5, 10 years it may be necessary to have access to your OWN cord blood for certain cures.
We did a lot of research. My niece is a PhD candidate at Tufts in Biomedical Engineering. I am totally confident that we have made the right choice with ViaCord - the parent company BTW is ViaCell and I just bought some stock of their stock, that's how much I believe in the company!!

I am going to ask some questions of ViaCord and the other companies. I have a feeling that this does not mean that you can't use another company's bag in connection with a C-section. I had a feeling that these companies would be very pushy (as halisa said). When I filled out the online form to receive ViaCord information, I wrote,"No calls please, I will call when I am ready." I don't think that will work but it will give me a right to be pretty rude if they do call.

Oh they will call - actually I was glad they did because I got to ask a lot of questions, and the guy I spoke with was really nice and helpful.
BUT ... I didn't give any info until I had pretty much already made up my mind of who I wanted to go with - this way I didn't get calls from 3 or 4 companies, just one.
And they did send me the welcome packet 3 times -- I yelled at them for that, lol.

I'm so completely confused by this and therefore am afraid to even look at my brochures for the 87th time. I am having a planned c-section too. I'm eager to know what you find out.

That is such a turnoff to me. I just don't like sales calls. I read somewhere on here a post from someone who had a m/c and kept getting the calls (or was it mail?) from a cord blood company.  I am actually turned off by all the glossy brochures from ViaCord and the fact that they are everywhere (in my dr. office, at the maternity store, printed in magazines, etc.).
Wouldn't if be great if the Baby Bargains book had a section on cord blood banks? I have never gone to their website. Maybe there is some info.

We went with ViaCord for this reason and because our Doctor advised they were the only company that has had a succesful transfer.........
And my Doctor was not pushy either way... they carried Viacord and CBR....

Yep, kara, you were right. ViaCord is all over my caller ID. I'm sorry but telemarketing for medical stuff is kinda cheesey, even though I may have to go with ViaCord.

That's too bad -- I was glad they called me because it was TIME for me to make a dscision...and that was the push I needed. ALso their rates supposedly were going up the 1st of May so that was thier excuse for calling -- it worked. But other than the package I got to bring to the hospital they haven't been "bugging" me since so that's a good thing.

i did a ton of research on viacord and cbr and found that cbr was more knowlegable with thier anwers..recently my sis looked into things ... she is preg also and went with viacord she said they have a better record and they have that bag that is fda approved. i am gonna switch to viacord bc they also do the research and cbr does not

at the time of my research, cbr was slightly less than viacord, both of course with the multiples discount that they offered. maybe it changed slightly, who knows.
dh and i both carry 2 different genetic blood trait disorders that are very serious. cbr knew more about them and answered my questions better about them.
when i asked my doctor which one he thought, because he has signs up for both, he thought they were both good.
in all honesty, i wish i was delivering at a hospital where you can donate to public banking. because i believe in public banking and the evolution of the science when public banks have the right resources. no offense to anyone, because i'm doing it too, but i feel that private banking sets up an elitist system in the world of science. will public banking ever be able to do the same level of research as the private banks???
but, since winthrop doesn't allow you donate and the choice of discarding it, is a worse choice to me, i chose to bank.
i pray none of us ever have to use it!!

Well, I am praying for unlikely event that it holds a cure for juvenile diabetes. In that case, unless there are too many risks, I hope that my husband can use it!!!!!!
I hope that none of us needs it for any acute illness, though.

my OB said that both viacord or CBR were great, but to be wary of the other companies without the history.
we went with CBR (I had a c/s) and will do it again as we will get a discount.
Some posters mention successful transfers? what do you mean?
