Those that have their DC in Speach Therapy...did you get their hearing checked prior to or during therapy sessions?

Was it also recommended by the therapist. My 23 month old finished his 2nd week of speech therapy and the therapist asked me today if I had his hearing checked. The last time he had his hearing checked was when he was born.

So now this is another concern I have. It wasn't that she thought he was having hearing problems I guess she just asked maybe to rule it out. I'll be asking the Ped. next month about it.

Did you have your DC checked out? What was the outcome if you dont mind me asking?

Yes, before my daughter started speech therapy I had her hearing checked. The therapist asked that we do that to rule out a hearing loss. It was very easy. They put headphones on her and played some different sounds and measured if her body responded to the sounds.

Her hearing was and is perfect and that wasn't an issue.

Thanks for posting how they do it. I was wondering how...hopefully my ds doesn't have any issues. Not sure if he will tolerate having headphones on though he's a little stubborn.

I did learn how they check newborn hearing I found that pretty interesting.

Yes, Our pediatrician did it. No head phones just a little ear piece.

This is how they did it for DS also.

They asked us to but there was no reason - we knew he could hear us....even if he chose to ignore us! Chat Icon

Same for us. We did it before EI. It was unrelated!

we also had his hearing checked before EI services began. No head phones here though. They had him sit on my lap in a little booth with lights hooked up in the top corners. They used the lights as conditioners and paired them with the sound. His conditioned response was to look at the light when the sound went off. He passed with flying colors and it was totally painless

eta: the county is responsibly for paying for 1 hearing test. My SC tried to convince me to go through my own insurance, but I knew better and knew that they were required to provide the payment. She tried using some bs line about how they can only pay for 1 in 3 years and I was like....OK, so pay for this one and if he needs another in the next 3 years (which I knew he wouldn't)...THEN i'll go through my own insurance.

My DS receives speech and they checked his ears during the evalution, they had their own testing booth.

ETA: His hearing is fine. He has tight jaw and lip muscles so it impacts his ability to articulate and his lack of ability to get the words out caused him to not have very good expressive language.
