Those still commuting (really commuting, ie with public transportation, not cars)
Ok, I'm offically done. I could cry. I feel so burnt out. I'm off Friday and then 12/19, and after the New Year I'll be working 2 days from home until I deliver, but I'm really feeling burned out from commuting. Its not my job, its physically getting here. Between the walk to the train (I park in Ronkonkoma so its a decent walk), then the LIRR train ride, the E train (worse part of all) and the 5-6 set of stairs each morning (mind you subway stairs which are on so much fun), I feel like crying every morning.
Plus, in my industry we make sales calls. I've drastically decreased my load at around 6 mos, but this week we have 2 stations in. I had to trek around NYC on Monday (so more subway fun) and tomorrow I have a dinner with clients (so won't get home until 10PM at least). Its just too much!!!
Now mind you I'm 35 weeks and carrying an overly large baby as is, I'm just so done.
How is the commute effecting you guys? My manager is very kind and says you can work from home as long as no clients are in and don't make it a habit, but I don't want to take advantage of her generosity.

That sounds like a nightmare of a commute. I hate commuting every morning. I literally gag for the 1 that it takes me to get to work. I am due in July, and am sooo not looking foward to commuting in the heat!

Re: Those still commuting (really commuting, ie with public transportation, not cars)
I feel your pain. I live in the city so i just take the subway. We live way uptown and work alllllllllllllll the way downtown by Wall Street. It was fine until about a week or so ago. I've just hit a wall energy wise and physically. My back can't handle the walking anymore. And I'm in prenatal yoga twice a week which totally helps, I don't know how I'd be able to do this without it. The worst is getting out of the train. I get out at Broadway/Nassau St. and that station is like a maze (very similiar to 42nd St). I take the A and have to walk up one flight of stairs then up zig-zag ramps then up 3 more flights of stairs. By the time I hit Fulton St. (above ground) I'm ready to die. Working from home is unfortunately not an option for me.
The fun part is that i'm only 30 weeks. I plan to work until I deliver and somedays I think, i have no idea how I'm going to keep doing this walk up the stairs for 8-10 more weeks.

Re: Those still commuting (really commuting, ie with public transportation, not cars)
Commuting has never really bothered me - I walk to the Massapequa train staion from my house each morning, and to/from the Office to Penn as well. -I have definitely slowed down a bit from my usual "get the EFF out of my way" run but I still kind of enjoy that time walking, about 25 minutes each way - And I sleep on the train.
I think it's probably the subway that's making your commute SO much harder for you w/ all of those stairs - THAT is a nightmare ......... I don't think working from home under teh circumstances your boss outlined for you would be taking advantage ........ - Even if you get ONE day of relief per week, it might make you feel a lot better !!
ETA - I'm also only 22 weeks . - Ask me again in a few months !!! I'm sure I'll be b*tching and complaining

Re: Those still commuting (really commuting, ie with public transportation, not cars)
I used to take the E to Lex ave and those stairs would kill me. It is definitley tough to commute when in the last tri. And then if I did not get a seat on the LIRR home from Penn, that was the last straw.
I think maybe taking one day to WFH would not be taking advantage

I COULD HAVE WRITTEN THIS MYSELF 3 WEEKS AGO before I got laid off... I'm also in sales making sales calls, the commute sounds just like mine, and I felt like such a wimp, I would come home and cry to DH about he commute, and he knew it was taking a toll on me, bc I'm usually tough enough to handle things... I think you should def try to work from home as much as possible, bc honestly the commute was making me feel like absolute azz, and the stress isn't worth it for you and the baby!!!!

Re: Those still commuting (really commuting, ie with public transportation, not cars)
I stopped commuting a month ago. Of course it wasn't my choice, but I honestly think at this point I wouldn't physically or emotionally be able to do it any more. It was seriously getting tough when I was put on bed rest and forced to stop. When I had an old train, it made things even worse. I could also never believe how rude everyone is; that I would still get pushed out of the way when people were getting on the train. If I were still commuting now there is a good chance I would have had a serious altercation with some people!

Kerry:
What about that week between xmas and new years? You know most agencies are closed so it will be dead on the sales side.
Can your manager let you work from home that week?
I feel for ya.

I am only 10 weeks but I am dreading the commute in the months to come. I hate it normally but now that I am pregnant it is 10 times worse. I really feel for you. I can't imagine doing it at your stage in the game.

Nope, unfortunetly we are open (its only 3 days that week though). Actually this year, most of the agencies are open.
