Those of you with "high needs" children

How do you do it? I've had almost 10 months of constant screaming, no naps, constantly needing to be held...well, you know the deal. I thought the colic and reflux was bad....I actually long for those days as he's worse now than ever.

Is there a point where it got better? Were there things you found that made your DC not so cranky?

I need some help here before I lose it. If I see my daughter put her fingers in her ears so she doesn't have to hear Jack cry again my heart is going to break.

Aww I'm so sorry Chat Icon My DD grew out of that fairly early but I know my friend had a screaming colicy baby for 11 months. For her, things finally got better when they put him on special formula. Have you taken the baby to the ped to see what they can suggest? Zantac and Alimentum helped my DD.

ETA also BELLY sleeping made a GIGANTIC difference for DD. She couldnt sleep well or very long on her back because the a/r was so bad. It's like night and day now that she sleeps on her belly.

I mainly describe DD as high need because she doesn't sleep or nap for long stretches. Naps are maybe 10 - 20 minutes, 30 occasionally and night sleeping is maybe 3 - 4 hour stretches. She always wants to be near me and I find wearing her in the sling makes her happy every time as does nursing! Also a change of pace, say if she is fussing we move to another part of the house. I just deal with what I was blessed with Chat Icon

Being able to walk made a tremendous difference in my baby's happiness. She was soooo frustrated before being mobile. Her general mood has improved and her naps have gotten longer since she started to walk... I hope you have the same luck!

Re: Those of you with "high needs" children

My baby was high needs until about 6 monthss- after we switched from Bm to alimentum formula- he had issues with colic then reflux and milk protein and he could not keep down breast milk even though I tried a special diet and everything.

He just became great at sleeping at 12 months before that he would not ever go in a crib and we had to sleep with him in our bed. At 12 months alot turned around for him- he switched over to the crib and sleeps better and is generally in a better mood because of that, although he has his moments. For him, I notice the better rested he is the better he is mood wise. I would focus on the naps alot- maybe that could be your answer.

For those who are worried about having more children -because one is like that, doesn't mean your next one will be too. My niece was colic/high-need. My sister waited 4 years before she was ready to deal with another baby like that. To her surprise, she was THRILLED to have a calm, easy baby for her second.

Re: Those of you with "high needs" children

Ha! High needs - Beth (bxgell) and I are always talking about what high needs kids we have! Joseph had AR too in the beginning and never slept thru the night - or napped for long periods. At about 8.5-9 months naps got SO much better and at 11 mos nighttime got SOOOOOOO much better. Now tho' he's become super clingy - can't put him down - won't go down for his nap w/o a fight, etc. FM me if you want to chat. Sometimes I chalk it up to "a phase" but othertimes I know it's probably just my "high maintenance" babyChat Icon

I'm LMAO about the "phase". I keep telling myself he'll grow out of it but I'm still waiting. He'll go through the night which is the ONE good thing but its the constant screaming and not being able to do anything that kills me. If I move he freaks and I cook dinner every night with him screaming at the top of his lungs. I can't hold him all day contrary to what he wants. He's 23 pounds at 9.5 months.....he a tad big LOL.

I have a day like today where he's been screaming since 6am....I give up.

Yup... been there, done that... just about every single night. The only thing that keeps her at bay is her "sweet potato puffs" as a distraction. Once she eats them up, the screaming begins. I've been tempted many a times to just dump the whole damn container and let her eat as much as she can possibly muster, just so I can finish dinner, which she probably won't eat because she'll be stuffed from all the puffs! Re: Those of you with "high needs" children

By the way, my daughter is definitely still "high needs", at almost one year... she needs constant attention and screams if she doesn't get exactly what she wants when she wants it... still wakes up screaming and still puts up a fight to go to bed. BUT, it isn't as bad as it used to be, and I think for us the real turning point was when she became mobile. She's happy as a clam if I just let her roam around the room and she can do what SHE wants... well, of course, only if mommy is within 2 feet of her, otherwise all hell breaks loose Chat Icon
