This whole not sleeping on our backs thing..
...how serious is that?
I always go to sleep on my side (I try to only lie on the left side but that's not as comfortable as my right side). However, every night I wake (once or twice) to go to the bathroom and I ALWAYS wake up on my back. I'm 30 weeks and it is starting to feel quite uncomfortable but I don't realize it until the urge to pee takes over and I wake. I know it's only going to get worse the bigger I get too and I'm not sure what to do.
I know we're not supposed to sleep on our backs - does anyone else find this happens to them? Any thoughts/advice?

Yes, it happens to me all the time. I almost always start off on my side and then end up on my back. I've also been told sleeping on your back is a no-no; however, if it's that bad, why do we always end up on our backs for sonos and doctor's appts? I don't know if there is much you can do, unless you get one of those pregnancy pillows or similar that might keep you in one spot.

Sleeping on your back is not bad for everyone. The weight of the uterus can put pressure on your vena cava and other major blood vessels, which can cause shortness of breath for you. However, not all bodies are created equal. If you are comfortable on your back, take full advantage of it. Let your body be your guide. If it becomes uncomfortable, then you know it's time to switch. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I ususally end up with my pregnancy pillow on top of me!
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one and that it's not all bad!

I do it also (not on purpose) and I heard as long as nothing is going numb or you don't have tingling sensations anywhere that you are fine.

Sleeping on your back won't harm your little one... sleep however you are comfortable. HOWEVER, with that said, I had a VERY scary experience at the end of my pregnancy. The name of the nerve or artery escapes me at the moment, but because of the weight of the baby on it when you sleep on your back, it can cause YOU to stop breathing. This happened to me one night, I woke up with a start because I could not catch my breath. Not even gasp for breath. It was one of the scariest moments of my life. Once I was able to regain my breath, it took me a while to start breathing normally again.

I start off on my left and end up on my back. No biggy, it's more for you then the baby. Some girls can't sleep on there backs b/c they literally can't breathe, for me...I can't sleep on my right side without gasping for air. The baby & your body will let you know when you need to turn back over.

I do the same thing. I am the least uncomfortable on my back. Maybe prop your upper body up with some pillows so you are not laying flat (It is not necessarily sleeping on your back, but sleeping flat on your back that is the problem)

Great point. I bet that would help. I NEVER used to sleep on my back, ever. I was always a tummy sleeper, but I guess I just do what's comfy in my sleep. As everyone said, as long as things aren't going numb or I'm not gasping for breath, I should be ok!
