Think I have bronchitis

Is it worth a trip to the doctor or is this one of those things they can't do anything for? I wake up coughing like crazy with mucus coming up (sorry, gross). And my chest feels irritated the rest of the day when I breathe deep.

I just don't want to go through the hassle of a doctor appt if they are going to just tell me fluids and rest.

Re: Think I have bronchitis

If you have bronchitis they give you meds I believe.
I had it a LONG time ago and I can't remember what they gave me but it was something
I know that if they suspect it is bacterial they will give you antibiotics

Do you have a fever?

Sorry, I couldn't resist Chat Icon

But yes, I've had it and have gotten meds. I'd go if I were you. Feel better!

Last spring I had it and the doctor gave me a pill to suppress the cough (which he said not to take frequently since you WANT to cough up the phlegm) but no medication for the bronchitis. Said it was likely viral. Eventually it went away. I had no fever though - If you have a fever, I’d go to the doc.

If you have bronchitis , yes please go to the dr as that can be very serious! I am a lifelong bronchitis sufferer, mine is always bacterial, not viral. You would need an antibiotic if that is the case, it doesn't go away by itself. I can't tell you how many times my bronchitis has turned into pnuemonia.

Edited to say I had bronchitis 5 times last year, besides an antibiotic to get rid of the infection, they may put you on a steroid also depending on the severity.

Be careful if they give you "Floxacin" family of antibiotics. They gave me Levaquin for "bronchitis"...I didn't have bronchitis...but I trusted them for an issue I was having with breathing.. Mistake. I took one pill, then had severe arm and tendon pain. I really haven't been the same since to be honest! And several friends have had horrible reactions to it. I subsequently read that many people have adverse reactions to that family of drugs. Most common is a rupture achilles tendon. It's nuts. It's now on my allergy list.

Yeah, go. I thought I had bronchitis one year, ignored it. Ended up with double pneumonia and a visit to the ER and hospital.

Me too. I refuse to take any quinalones (the fancy name for those -cin antibiotics.) I took once for sinus infection and my hands seized up, couldn't open or close my fingers and extreme pain. Wont take it anymore.
