The sounds my kid makes ...

I feel like I should collect the progression of sounds DS has been making since birth, they have always bewildered me. Are they happy, sad, is he calling for me?, is he just playing? testing his voice?

This morning he's laying around in his crib playing with toys, and doing something between a squeel and a scream. And DH and I look at each other every now and then and say "that's happy sound right?" "I guess so, he's not crying"

So it progresses to just screams, but wait, screams in different tones, like he's practicing scales. With some intermixed mumble of a babble.

What is he doing? And how do I know if any of that means "mommy come get me or I'll be psychologically scarred!" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I wish I could tell you. Mason is 14 months and says a few words, but now he's into these sounds where he's calling out or grunts when he wants something. He knows how to say "more," but will grunt.

All babies do this. Totally normal. They like playing with sounds and usually when they make a new one they repeat it over and over again. It's like a game to them. If he's content and not crying or yelling for mommy then he's fine

Re: The sounds my kid makes ...

well we are only 5m, so I don't know what he's using for mommy, but there are sounds that he's been saying since birth, like nya, and neh, that he uses when he wants a paci or bottle. And eh or heh when he needs a diaper change.

We've relied on Dunsten Baby language to decode his first sounds, it helped tons, but this new era of grunting and screaming is a whole new world.
