The smell of dog...

The people we bought our house from had 3 dogs. The tenant downstairs had one dog. We have ripped up every carpet they had and have redone ALL floors in the house. We have also painted the entire house.

Yesterday we came home and the house smelled like dog. You know the hot day damp dog smell.

We have even replaced all the trims and basemoldings in the house and vacuumed all nooks and cranies.

What the heck can I do to get this awful smell out?

You can only smell it when all the windows are closed. But still, nasty.

If their were stains on the hardwood floors, they probably went through to the sub floor and paper between the floors.

If it is a pet urine smell very hard to remove. Since it is in the wood.

it's not urine smell. It's the smell of a wet damp dog.

(there were NO stains on the hardwoods).

Do you have CAC? If so, is it set at a reasonably cool temperature?

If you don't have CAC, do you have dehumidifiers running?

It sounds like your house just smells damp, which can smell like wet dog. I doubt you are actually smelling dog.

We washed the rugs again and used Arm and Hammer Pet Fresh. Put it down on the carpet and keep it there for about 15 minutes then vaccum. We did that a number of times before the smell even began to go away!

do you have CAC? if so, you should get your vents cleaned. after we had ours cleaned, most of the bad smells went away, including pet odors. occasionally though, we still smell stale cigarette smoke on hot or humid days; we think its coming from the attic and may have seeped into the insulation up there.

this happened to me when we moved into this apt.

it smelled like stale cigs and wet dog SOOOO bad!!

we literally ripped up rugs and replaced rugs and floors in other rooms. i washed EVERY surface with mr clean (the neon green liquid stuff and the magic eraser too) and other hard core cleaners (almost every kind you can imagine and I cleaned everything in layers). i mopped the walls and ceilings. I sanded the cabinets and primed and painted. I did SOOO much work to get rid of that smell and clean the place up.

we did one room at a time more or less... and the rooms we didn't touch still smelled like dog.... then as we tackled each room, it became less and less.

dont forget to SCRUB the windows too.

also, we painted EVERY SINGLE SURFACE!! we primed and painted. this was after mopping them of course. so the combination of it all and then the primer and paint worked. I can now say... there is no more dog smell here.

also, don't forget to clean light fixtures, etc.

I have literally scrubed every room down, from floor to ceiling ( I have an obsession with cleaning) and we removed any of their carpets and put new ones in two rooms. I have also cleaned all A/C vents and anything else that can come off them. Moved all apliances and still get the dog smell. I give up.

Did you repaint? Sounds silly but even the walls will hold that smell. My last apartment smelled like that. I cleaned non stop & repainted. It finally went away

white vinager in a small cup in the room for a few days gets rid of dog and cigerette smells!!! works wonders!

You can look into getting your vents cleaned(ac/heat)
