Re: The Queen
I borrowed it from a library a few weeks ago.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing from the royals. I haf expected what happened from the Queen, but Prince Philip and Prince Charles was a little surprising to me. Charles was trying to do anything to make him look better in the public light after his affair with Camille got public duing the divorce.
And Prime Minister -I didn't realize the circle of events with his new election to Parliament at the time of the death of Diana.

I thought he did a great job in convincing the royals to do the right thing. like that was SO HARD?! what a bunch of over-privilaged &*^%!

I really enjoyed it and thought it was very well done. It was amazing how out of touch the royals were, and how they didn't seem to realize just how much everyone loved Diana.

But one thing I always try to keep in mind when watching something about English royalty - as much as we think they are acting like stuck up SOB's, they are just following the tradition of their positions, and trying to acclimate the 21st century into a heicharchy that has been around for over hundreds of years. Making changes to that sort of history will always be troublesome.
No that I'm defending what the Queen and 2 princes did to Diana. She deserved better, her sons deserve better....

The Queen is a movie - sort of a documentary about how the Royal family in Britain reacted during the weeks before and after Diana's death.

I know it's a movie.
But I honestly had no idea that they acted badly.

I would recommend borrowing it to watch. It won the actress who played Queen Elizabeth an Oscar this past year. The movie opened your eyes up to how the royals really felt about Diana - I think at one point in the movie Philip called her a whore of somesort.

Re: The Queen
OMG even though the film was on TV last night, and I dvr'ed it and haven't watched it yet, I feel sort of obligated to defend Lizzie. I don't know why, but I think the Diana thing is blown way out of proportion...its 10 years on. I think a heck of a lot of Britons feel that way these days.
I am not a royalist, but I believe in the Queen and the Monarchy as a symbol of Britain...I kind of like the Royal Family. I like the imagine them in all kinds of situations...kind of like Barbies...
She is so cute! She is on all my money! I love her!

Re: The Queen
I actually understood the Queen's side more after watching it.
The conflict between the old way & new way.
The reason Diana caused such waves in the family.
I felt bad for the Queen. I'm sure disliking your DIL is difficult enough but dealing with the public who adored her & rallied against you is very tough.

Re: The Queen
Thank you Racheeee
I am British as is my DH.
I was still living in the UK when Diana died and I was and still am a big fan of hers. I went to Kensington Palace in the days after her death to pay my respects and leave flowers.
I am also very proud of the Monarchy, I believe that the Queen was trying in her own way to protect her grandsons by keeping them at Balmoral out of the glare of the press that treated their Mother in such an appalling manner.
The Queen was also following a protocol that has been in place in the United Kindom for hundreds of years, whilst at the time she may not have been "in touch" with what many people in the UK and around the world felt, she was doing what she thought was best and was trying to protect two young children and the Monarchy.
We will never know exactly what was said or done at Balmoral after Diana died, but you will find in the UK that both Prince William & Prince Harry defend their family fiercely in regards to their actions after their Mothers untimely death.

Re: The Queen
Unfortunately if you go back into the history of the British Monarchy you will find that the men of this family have a hard time "keeping it in their pants"
This is very obvious if you look at Henry The 8th, who had a "new religion" started, now known as The Church Of England, which is now the most common of the Christian religions in the UK. He started this new religion so that he could divorce his first wife Catherine Of Aragon (who was originally his Brothers wife, but he married her after his Brother died) and marry his second wife Anne Boleyn, who was his mistress before the creation of the Church of England whilst he was still married to Catherine.
I think that Charles was always in love with Camilla, but could not marry her at that time because she wasn't a virgin and therefore not suitable. So he married Diana who was suitable and a virgin.
To us "commoners" this seems wrong and unfair and a horrible way to treat someone, but in world that Prince Charles lived in at that time it was acceptable to him and to those around him.
I think that Diana bought a breath of fresh air to a Monarchy that desperately needed it. The problem is that the Royal Family are so steeped in tradition and privacy that they found her ways hard to handle.
When I was growing up we never saw photographs of the Royal family as we do these days and the press would never have dared to print anything that was derogatory towards the Royals, and that was just the way it was. The Royal family that we see today is a far cry from the Royal family pre-Diana, she bought them kicking and screaming into the 21st century, whether they wanted it or not.

I thought that the reason Charles couldn't marry Camilla was: 1. She was married to her husband 2. Or she as divorced and the monarchy didn't allow heirs to the throne to maryr divorced women.
Which is odd - cause they're married now.
I completely agree, though - Diana pushed the royal family into the public media scrutiny whether they liked it or not.

Re: The Queen
Before he married Diana, years ago he was hanging out with Camilla, but she had already played "hide the sausage" with Andrew Parker Bowles and then Charles went off to sea with the Royal Navy and she married Andrew.
In the Church of England it is allowed to marry a divorcee (Henry the 8th) but frowned upon to a degree, but the Head of Church Of England (a position held by reignng Queen or King) would be a big no-no.
These days however it seems that they are either bending the rules or turning a blind eye, or maybe even becoming more modern
I don't think think Charles will be our next King, I think it will be William, at least I hope so. Mind you the Queen isn't going anywhere yet (her Mother lived to 102 and started on the gin & tonics supposedly just after morning coffee) and she has always said that she will never abdicate.

Right according the Royals she did make waves. She was not their ideal "Princess".
I think it's only payback that she is one of the iconic figures of our time for how they did treat her while she was alive.
