The Next Survivor
The next planned survivor show --- teachers
Three business men and three businesswomen will be dropped off in an elementary school classroom for 6 weeks. Each business person will be provided with a copy of his/her school district's curriculum, and a class of 28 students.
Each class will have 5 learning-disabled children, 3 with ADD, 1 gifted child, and 2 who speak limited English. 3 will be labeled with severe behavior problems.
Each business person must complete lesson plans at least 3 days in advance with annotations for curriculum objectives and modify, organize, or create materials accordingly.
They will be required to teach students, handle misconduct, implement technology, document attendance, write referrals, correct homework, make bulletin boards, compute grades, complete report cards, document benchmarks, communicate with parents, and arrange parent conferences.
They must also supervise recess and monitor hallways. In addition, they will complete drills for fire, tornadoes, and shooting attacks.
They must attend 10 hours of workshops, faculty meetings, union meetings, and curriculum development meetings.
They must also tutor those students who are behind and strive to get their 2 non-english speaking children proficient enough to take their state's achievement tests.
If they are sick or having a bad day, they must not let it show.
Each day they must incorporate reading, math, science, and social studies into their program.
They must maintain discipline and provide an educationally stimulating environment at all times.
The business people will have access to the golf course on the weekends, but on their new salary they will not be able to afford it anyway.
There will be no access to vendors who want to take them out to lunch, and lunch will be limited to 30 min. On days when they don't have recess duty, the business person will be permitted to use the staff restroom as long as another survival candidate is supervising their class.
They will be provided with two, 40-min. planning periods per week while the students are at activity classes. If the copier is operable, they may make copies of necessary materials at this time. Oh, did I mention the small budget they get to pay for all their supplies and materials.
The business people must continually advance their education on their own time, and pay for this advanced training themselves. This can be accomplished by moonlighting at a second job or marrying someone with money.
The winner will be allowed to return to his or her job.
Pass this to your friends who think teaching is easy and to the ones that know it is hard. They will both benefit.
******** Updated to include NYC standards: Now teachers will have to have a whole new part of their job: paperwork. You must show goals for each of your students in all areas, and it must be displayed somewhere in your classroom. Make sure each child knows their goals or it will look like you are not doing your job, which used to be teaching but is not taking, organizing, and filing paperwork.

Re: The Next Survivor
Reading that makes me want to quit my job.
I seriously don't know how we do it. And- about those goals... has your school informed you that YOU need to make goals for YOURSELF!??!?! ARE WE CHILDREN? It's like all the teachers are required to have an IEP and it's monitored by the A.P.'s!!!!!!!!!! TOTALLY RIDICULOUS!
I am getting so fed up with this system and I've only been there 7 months.

We have Quality Review in a couple of weeks and an urgent e-mail went out about goals. Each student must have goals for each class ( I teach HS) and be able to recite them if ask.

I love the idea for this survivor! I dare anyone to try it!!!! I work for a private school but DH works for the DOE at a HS and he has goal days every few weeks. It's a joke to the teachers. If they asked me what my goal is I think it would take a lot not to say Not to throw anything at any of my students!

Re: The Next Survivor
I thought my school lied about these goals being a DOE thing!!! We started them in October and I had typed them up- all fancy and then Im told that they have to be goals that the kids make for themselves and recite them... this is too much and ridiculous!!!
