It was for beta testing some new features that they were supposedly going to implement. There were a bunch of us heavy users that were selected to participate, submit suggestions, test out new things, comment on any changes, etc.
There hasn't been any serious posts in there (other than "is anything going on in here?") in about 5 years...

Posting videos in-line, mobile ste, avatar changes, smilie changes.
There were a bunch of things that were promised that never made it to the site, like a mobile app, real-time chat, a bunch of infrastructure changes that would change the way the forum looked and behaved.
