The mail and paper beast

How do you tame it? Mail, bills, paperwork, coupons, magazines, newspapers... they all seem to pile up in my kitchen and now spilling over into other areas. I dread having to look for something because it'll take me forever to find it. Anyone have a good organization system that works?

I'm the same way. I stopped my newspaper and magazines and read online news if I want. I let DH do the mail because he will toss everything immediately except bills and my coupons and that's all I need to deal with. I still keep too much paper. I finally got a new laptop so I will be storing pdfs of bills I want to keep instead of paper.

Go through right away.
Recycle junk
Put coupons near purse since I will keep them in my car in a bag
Bills go in a folder near my planner
Paid bills go in a plastic tickler file envelope thing with monthly divider s.

It's now school papers that I have to tame. Holy cow, I thought mail was bad!

We only do online Magazines and newspapers. Mail I go through as I walk to the garbage. All my bills are electronic. If it's a Drs bill I pay it immediately, usually on my phone then toss it. Kids projects I put in a bin and then once a month due a purge with dd so she has a say of what's kept and what's purged.

I'm the queen of piles but it drives me crazy to see the piles.

Re: The mail and paper beast

I have asked this question a thousand times. In April, I read a book called he life changing magic of tidying up by Marie Kondo and it changed me monumentally and fundamentally. It helped me shift my way of thinking about keeping, thanking, using, and discarding items in my home. I highly recommend the book and its sequel, Spark Joy.

For me, I have a place in my kitchen that has a hanging file box from the container store. It contains files for

Home
Banking
Insurance
Medical
School
Contacts
Coupons

I have a system to go through the files once a month and discard what I don't need any more and what needs to be acted upon.

Bills are paid on line. I review the cc bill as it comes in and then I shred it.

I have the school calendar attached to the inside of a cabinet.

Also in the storage box are envelopes, stamps, and some thank you notes.

I put coupons right into my purse so I always have them with me. I have a magazine basket so as magazines come in they go right in there.

For my bills, I am completely paperless. I have an Erin Condren planner which is my bible for EVERYTHING!! I use the monthly calendars to fill in when everything is due and I just highlight what I've paid when I sit down to pay my bills. I keep important notices, invites, and other things in my planner too so I always know where to find them.

For any other paperwork, if I don't need it I shred it right away and if I do need to keep something I have a wooden bin on my desk for things that need to be filed. Every week or so I empty that and file things into the folders in my file drawer.

Important school notices or notes I keep taped in the inside of my spice cabinet.

The best thing you can do is to NOT let things pile up otherwise you'll feel overwhelmed and more likely to lose things. Chat Icon
