Thank you letter for a promotion

Well the good news is I just got a substantial promotion. I have a mentor and she is encouraging me to write a hand written thank you letter to my boss and Prez to thank them.
Granted it is a time of layoffs within the company and they are my new management since my dept. was restructured 6 months ago so I am grateful.

Has anyone ever written a thank you note? If so what do I say? I mean I feel like I worked hard to earn it but I also realize they had to cut through a lot of corporate red tape to get me the promotion in title and salary.

What would you do?

I would think you'd write them to thank the for recognizing your hard work and dedication and tell them how much you appreciate working for the co?

I was going to say the same thing - Don't thank them for the "promotion" - b/c you're right, you earned that -

But you CAN Thank them for RECOGNIZING the hard work that did earn you the promotion-

I have to ask - is this "mentor" someone senior to you at your job or not? If it's not someone in your company in whom you have a lot of faith, then I don't think I'd write a hand-written thank you note for a promotion, even if it was just saying "thank you for recognizing my hard work, etc." -- I think it's unnecessary in a corporate environment and possibly over the top.

Then again, I don't know what sort of company you work for. In my line of work, I don't think such a note would be necessary and may not even be appropriate...

I have to say thats the reason I was asking because I was thinking an email and she said to write a hand written note which seemed too personal and awkward in my opinion. It's not like they gave me a gift I sort of earned it but I do want to be grateful, that can only help me. My mentor is someone who is senior within my industry so she is executive management at another network lets say so I do value her opinion.

I like saying thank you for "recognizing" vs promotion. Thanks everyone!
