Tests during pregnancy
What do they test for during pregnancy (minus the amnio). My dr. said they go over chromosomal history or something at the first and then you hear about all these tests and bloodwork.

Re: Tests during pregnancy
Lets see if I can remember--I am three months now/ 1st test was a blood test -like 6 vials---test for alot of thigs--anemia--some genetic issues...not downs--dk every single thing
The second test is the 12 week sono-blood test and genetic background--and if chosen the nuchal fold test-the least ivasive test for Downs/ Alll info is then put into a computer for the odds/ I am having this Thurs. After that--I think glucose test----and later on another big sono..I don't remember anything else.

Re: Tests during pregnancy
When do they do the "six vials"? I have not had any blood work other than hgc & progesterone levels & I'm 7 weeks.

Re: Tests during pregnancy
At my first appt. they took lots of blood for various tests. Then I had the ultrascreen/nuchal trans-something, which tests for downs and other chromosomal abnormalities (although I'm not sure if everyone gets that - it was recommended to me because I'm 35.) With that test I had genetic counseling. Then I had the AFP test (I can't even remember what that tests for - I think it may be spinabifida (sp?)). Then there was the Level 2 sonogram, which looked at the baby in depth - all the body parts. Then there was the glucose test for gestational diabetes. Next I have the strep-B test, which I think I will have in a week when I'm 35 weeks.
That's all I remember.

They took the 6 vials (I"m not even sure that it was that many - I thought it was more like 4) at my first visit after he confirmed I was PG - I was 9 weeks along then.

Re: Tests during pregnancy
ok - thanks, I guess there's still time for tests. I have an appt next Wed. for an exam & sono (first). I'll ask then about all the tests.

Re: Tests during pregnancy
I had my first blood drawn at 8 weeks (they test for everything - anemia, your RH factor, your blood type, HIV, STD's, etc)
My next blood work will be the AFP test at 17 weeks (this is optional, it tests for downs and spina bifida)
Then you have more bllod drawn at 28 weeks, I believe. Your doctor should give you a printout of all of this

Re: Tests during pregnancy
I think I had the vials drawn around 9 or 10 weeks. it was fast---tiny vials.

Re: Tests during pregnancy
Is the level II considered a medically necessary sonogram? I called my insurance today to ask if I was covered for the Ultrascreen and they said it counts as the one sonogram I'm allowed to get, other than those considered medically necessary. So is the level II medically necessary? What do they do at the level II?
