Terrible twos
Dd is such a sweet girl, but lately she can be so difficult. The main problem is she gets so rough! She flails and kicks and hits when she doesn't get her way. She's head butted me in the jaw several times too, and yesterday she broke DHs glasses. She just turned two a couple weeks ago, so she doesn't really understand when we get mad. She just laughs . So is there any thing we can do at this point, like a time out or something, that would help her understand not to beat us up?

yes. I do time outs. section her off in the living room with a baby gate or have put her in the crib and explain to her why she is getting the time out. I tell her, I was having fun with you or I wanted to play with you but.. you did this and this and it made me feel this and this... so then I say you need to stay here and calm down and when she is better and less tantrumy, I ask if she wants to say sorry and if she can hug or kiss me... she usually says yes. Only 1 or 2x has she said no. and I leave her there until she is ready. the tantrums are way better already. I started doing this around 22 months. she is 26 months now. eta: meant to say way better since i've been doing this. she has gotten a lot better about controlling her emotions. I focus on her giving me words for why she is upset. and then i say im not playing with you until you calm down.

Re: Terrible twos
DD went through serious terrible twos. That's when i started "time outs" - I call them "taking a break." I used it for hitting, throwing, screaming, etc. It worked great with her. It always helps her calm down, etc.
ETA; I have her sit in a certain spot in the kitchen. I never used the crib because she was NOT a good sleeper and i didn't want her to associate the crib with anything negative, just good sleep! In the kitchen, I could still be near her, etc.

Both helpful suggestions, thank you!
Good point about not using the crib for time outs. My dd is not a good sleeper either, so I definitely don't want to make her more scared of her crib. We have a gate set up in her bedroom doorway, so I will just use that or maybe put her in her pack n play.

I think at 2 they can definitely understand when you tell them what they're doing wrong (they may not want to hear it or pretend they don't but that' another story). I started time out just before 2 and had her sit on the step in the kitchen for one minute. After she turned 2 it went up to two minutes. I use the oven timer which helps bc she knows she has to sit until the beep and most of the time she doesn't get up. Afterward I remind her why she got the time out and she has to apologize and then she gets a hug and a kiss and we put it behind us. The step is nice bc I can pretty much implement it anywhere if I need to. I've had her sit on the edge of the minivan bc she wouldn't sit in the shopping cart. Time out ended and she sat down fine. Now at 2.5 I hardly ever have to give her a time out.

Depends on the situation. We usually have to remove her from the situation. Really hard when there is only one adult. When there is more than 1, 1+ stays and resumes business as usual, while DD is outside until she is ready to go back in. If I'm alone, I usually resort to worse methods, like bribes. Food in my bag, any distraction I can use to just get out of the store.

Re: Terrible twos
Time outs. Make no reaction to her, just tell her "NO" firmly and put her in time out. We use the play yard or crib b/c they would get right up off a step or chair. (it never created an issue going in their crib at night). We have been doing it for awhile and now when they act up I can say "stop or you will get a time out" and the sometimes stop and look at the play yard. Other times they continue and think they are funny so they get the time out. My one DD we can tell her silly things like "uh oh, no kitty cats if you take your pony tail out" and she will stop. Or if she is squirming while getting pjs on, I tell her "get your pjs on or no book" and she lays down and says "book". They just turned 2 two weeks ago.

Re: Terrible twos
We are having a problem with DD also. I think it is mostly because she is jealous of DS who is only 6 months. I started to put her in her room on a chair and I call it "the bad girl chair". I will put her in the chair and tell her she has to stay there for 2 minutes. She screams and cries the entire time, but when its over she says she is sorry. It is so rough when they are so young, I feel like they don't understand why you are mad and why they are in "time-out"
