Teaching over Skype
I’ve taken graduate courses online. I think a very well recorded presentation always helped, PowerPoints that are clear, concise and complete, examples, and interactive learning tools have been most helpful. I’ve also held and have participated in zooms- an online study group. I personally would make sure any sessions are in a well lit room free of distractions, I’ve seen people’s houses a mess, people I have never met because it’s an online study group, and it’s distracting. Poor internet connection is a big thing, poor audio too. While I think Skype is great, I think having a well developed curriculum and plan of teaching is important as is how your service will be delivered, so creating the curriculum in advance, setting up interactive lessons etc as much as the technology component! I currently teach a program as a bcba where I work that I spent a year developing and then teach onsite and remotely. Not having everything organized and easily accessible to my students would be confusing given the content. Also, under developed technology can be an issue. My employer had to recently upgrade our learning management system to handle a lot of the training capabilities we needed to train remotely. I hope this helps!

Re: Teaching over Skype
OK, the PowerPoint suggestion is helpful. Do you just send it ahead of time by email? That is what I’m wondering, the logistics.

Re: Teaching over Skype
A friend of mine taught English over skype from the U.S. with the company 51 talk. You can do it from anywhere in the world...but it might be a good resource for you.

I make all trainings available through a learning management system and all course materials available ahead of one. Each topic is broken down and in sub folders. Only thing I don’t release ahead of time are exams

Thank you for that. I’ll have a look at it a bit later.

They are ok, we use them on a large scale at work and as training has evolved we have needed different capabilities. They do have some limitations but it’s a good entry level platform. For example, I need exams to randomize yet give me access to all test scores to do an analysis by topic, I have to cut and paste into excel to get the analysis I’m looking for so for me that’s takes time- about 30 minutes per student and if the system was more capable it would be more efficient for me, but I’m only giving out about 60 exams a year so it’s not terrible

Re: Teaching over Skype
My sister teaches Spanish, and once while she was on vacation, I saw her teaching one of her students. He is advanced and she sent to him an article before, which they discussed over Skype.

Re: Teaching over Skype
Thank you all for your replies! I will check out all those platforms and try to get it going. I’m good with computers, but I’ve never done something like this before.
