Teachers...who have cracked!
Today was such an awful day for me. I never let my students get to me. I always tell lmyself that they are 4 & 5 but today in the late afternoon, I just felt helpless. My kids this year are crazy and I have a lot that try my patience. Anyhow, between lots of crying for attention and other annoying things I actually had to have someone come in my room because I was just loosing my mind. Has anyone ever felt like this before?

I thnk it's just this time of year - although, I have been feeling more "burned-out" this year than any year previously.
I flipped out on my 8th graders yesterday because they refused to listen to me. It's like I wasn't even talking at all.

No, I am sure your son is fine. This year they are just rude and defiant. I mean this disrespect that so many of these kindergarteners have is really crazy. You would be shocked! I am not at all saying that kids can't cry or whatever however, I mean the sound is peersing like an infant and dramatic like hanging on my leg for tantruming on the floor! Never in my 6 years has it been this bad.

Oh yesssssss. When I taught pre-k and kindergarten there were times that I literally had to walk away for a few to get myself together - it can make you feel like you are going to go insane!
Now I teach 2nd and although I feel it sometimes, it is never as bad as with the younger ones. However, that being said, 4 and 5 is such an awesome age, and tomorrow you will love them as if nothing ever happened today!

Have I ever cracked as in completely lose it? No. I have to remind myself that despite the fact that I work with a popluation of students who are severely emotionally disturbed, they are compelled to act the way they act and do what they do or they would not be in my class. They simply cannot help themselves.
I also remind myself that NOTHING is worth sacrificing my career and the time and money invested in my education. "Cracking" would cost me my livelihood and it isnt worth it.
That being said, here are a few things I have had to deal with in the past ten years when I could have lost it:
Spitting in my face
Hair pulling
Biting
Verbal assaults
Punching
Pencils thrown at my head
Furniture pushed into me.

I LITERALLY said this to one of my coworkers today. I feel exactly the same way except that I teach 1st grade. It started with the short weeks this month, it had them out of it and I see no end in sight. I feel like I am literally repeating myself 100 times a day and they are just not listening. I have always felt confident in my behavior management but this year, they just seem so crazy, especially my boys. I feel like I have been so strict lately and I don't like it. I hate that every Monday I say, "can't wait til Friday!"

I completely understand where you are coming from. I teach four and five year olds as well and some days they just drive me bananas....today happened to be one of them (so I definitely understand) Have I ever completely cracked? No.....but when I do feel myself losing my patience I have to walk away or just ignore the child who is driving me crazy....permitting that they are safe and not causing any harm to themselves or others....usually I have my assistant teacher deal with them for the time being. My class this year for the most part is a great group.....but the girls tend to be very catty. For instance this one lil one says to me today "You know, I really don't have to listen to what you say to me". I nearly hit the floor. I was ******....mind you she is four. I was like "EXCUSE ME"....we do NOT talk to teachers like that." I must have really gave it to her because on her own she apologized. More and more I see these children that are soooooo disrespectful, it's crazy!!! Point being.....I definitely relate to you!! Hang in there....just think....we are doing a rewarding job

I teach Sunday school for an hour each week and I'm usually pulling my hair out by the end of it, hence my utmost respect for teachers.
Hang in there. A break is right around the corner.

OMG! I didn't crack like I was going to do anything. I just emotional cracked down. I needed to walk away from the class for a few minutes. I was so upset that I let them emotionaly crack down. Sometimes I just wonder if they act this way at school, what do they do at home?

You are so lucky that you have a TA in your room. Unfortunealy, I do not. I hear ya on the things they say. I swear you would think they were teengagers, and like I said, it is sometimes scary to think what they say and do at home if they feel comfortable to say and do these things at school.
I feel much better today. I haven't broke down (with tears, outside the room) since I had a 1st grader throw a chair across the room three years ago. Mind you then and now they are regular edu. kids. But okay, I am done venting! Thanks for listening and for the hugs!

well, thats WHY they act this way at school, because their parents let them get away with it at home! i work as a speech therapist in a school, and its unbeleive how these kids ignore and disrespect adults sometimes! parents today REALLY need to start stepping up at home and teaching their kids the basics of following rules and respecting adults
