Teachers WWYD??
I posted this on the teacher board but I am not sure how often it is checked so I figured I would post here too....
I am a middle school teacher for the NYC DOE and my principal makes us walk our students from class to class because its a rough school and this is in hopes that it will prevent less fights and choas in the building. I don't think this is a DOE requirement just hers.
Anyway, I really don't have a problem with this but I am now 8 months pregnant. The kids have absolutely no regards for their surroundings and its a war zone during lunch time, arrival, and dismissal. Today when I was dropping my kids off to lunch I almost got pushed on the stairs and I had to yell at students (not mine) for pushing each other and almost knocking into me. Then when I was waiting with my class for the cafeteria to open a fight broke out and all the other kids came charging and I almost got knocked into again several times. I walked the other way and told the security guard and left the scene but I am starting to feel it is unsafe for me.
Should I tell my principal that I no longer feel safe walking my class to lunch? Should I get a doctors note? Should I bring my union rep? I feel like i am slightly being crazy but at the same time I don't want to harm my baby.
Any advice would be great!! Thanks.

YES!!! Speak with your principal first and if she gives you any type of hard time, get your Dr. to fax over a note. DO NOT put yourself in unnecessary jeopardy at this point in the game. I work in a middle school in the city too and know exactly how crazy it can get, but life will go on without you walking kids for the last several weeks. It's just not worth it. Good luck!

I completely agree!! You only have a few weeks left anyway, so your principal should really be understanding. If not, like PP said, I would get a doctor's note and your union rep if necessary. I dont think you are being crazy at all and I think it's a totally reasonable request. Your principal should definitely understand where you're coming from.

Also if she gives you an issue talk to our UFT rep as per your contract I do not think you NEED to do this..look into it. GOOD LUCK

i dont even go in the hallways now when i don't have to walk from one class to another, and im just under 6 months...
makes me very uncomfortable w/how they run, don't watch where they're going, etc...
first thing my principal told me was that as soon as im not comfortable...stay out of the hallways during passing time and i plan to do so,
and im sure if your principal isn't as open to that, with a doctor's note it would be hard not to allow it regardless

Thanks for all the advice! I can't read my principal... I feel like she will say do what makes me feel comfortable but kind of put pressure on me to walk them anyway. She is very set in her ways. Hopefully she won't make me feel too guilty.

since I've been pregnant, I've felt like F*** everybody that doesn't have my true best interests at heart....
I got a dr note for the slip i took that has caused a swelling in my groin (could be a hernia, varicosity, or just a swollen muscle) but its very painful after standing a while...got a note saying i must be allowed to sit when it's flared up...
im untenured and of course worried that if im not mobile and circulating and being a "good teacher" that it will be bad, but guess what??? im pregnant and that's #1 right now...my health and LO's health is priority right now and if I have to get a dr's note to protect my a$$ so be it...
honestly, F*** guilt, that's not something you should worry about, and I hate that you have to even be made to feel that way.
sorry i seem so forceful about this LOL its not towards you its towards ppl who don't understand that pregnancy is IMPORTANT!!!! more important than their priorities at times.

nooo not a chicken, just conscientious...2 totally different things and conscientious is a good thing...just should be all the more reason why your principal should see that you ARE concerned about keeping up your responsibilties despite your pregnancy, and should appreciate it, and then reciprocate for you by showing that your pregnancy is something important as well...def think a doctor's note would just help to validate the request esp in an untenured situation...I'd get the note then have the convo...
