Teachers!!! We got it!!!

I know that some teachers out there are not happy with the NYC contract, but it offers some protection. And at least our minds are at ease!Chat Icon

Re: Teachers!!! We got it!!!

What protection does it offer us? More time for the same money. No ability to dispute a "U" Horrible principals get to remain in staff. It is time for me to go back to Catholic school!

Well congrats on getting the contract....

Isn't it harder to get fired from NYC teaching jobs than private schools? My sister has been teaching in NYC for 14 years now -- she says the security is what keeps her there (plus she took sabbatical last year - she was holding out for that!).

Since we get tenure, and private schools may not, that is true. My guess is that tenure in NYC is on the way out, which is a good and bad thing. I work with a couple people who have no business in the classroom, but thanks to tenure (and supervisors who let them get away with it, but that's another story) there is not a lot to be done. On the other hand, I feel better knowing that I can teach my kids and not worry about a supervisor with a personal gripe getting me fired. It's a double edged sword.

As for the contract, I am definitely annoyed about the givebacks. But you know what? Bloomberg will not be around forever, neither will Klein, nor Randi. Bloomberg was NOT coming back to the table if we voted this down, and I can only speak for myself when I say that this raise willl make a good difference for me.

People in the private sector are being laid off left and right. Personally, I have been employed full time with the DOE since 1997 and I have no concerns about being laid off.

actually no we didnt.. if you figure out the extra time its not a 15& raise... When you work for a big firm you usally get a raise no strings attached. here we get a "raise' but we have to work more an give up the right to fight a U rating. so no its not a 15% raise.

I don't meant to be rude but no one gets a 15% raise in the way you're talking about it. No matter what industry you're in, if they're paying you 15% more than what you were previously making, they expect more out of you. 5% is a raise - 15% is a pay adjustment for new responsibilities and/or more work.

I understand the grievance over losing the right to fight any sort of rating you're given but as far as saying you're not getting anything because of 3 more days a year and 10 more minutes a day... well, that's just silly IMO.

Re: Teachers!!! We got it!!!

first off its more than 10 minutes a day. and i understabnd 15is a HUGE rise but like i said we are not getting near 15% when you figure it all out and we deserve a real 15% raise b/c if you look at what other teachers make we are still on the very very low end.

To each his own I guess. I'm sorry you're not happy with the new contract but as someone else said, Bloomberg will only be mayor for four more years.
