Teacher's Maternity Leave?

Okay,
So, how does maternity leave work if you are a teacher? I know we get 6 to 8 weeks... but does that come out of our collected sick days? So if I have 30 sick days... does that mean that's my 6 weeks (counting school days)? and then if I have to be out any longer would it come through the sick bank? Like if I had to have a c-section that's usually 8 weeks out. Also, if you have a baby over the summer and don't use the maternity days, can you use the 6-8 weeks for the first quarter of school?

I'm so confused on how this works.
I want to ask people at my job, but I can't until they know I'm pregnant.

Thanks so much!

Re: Teacher's Maternity Leave?

All districts on LI are different.

My district gives you up to 60 paid teaching days but only if you have 60 sick days accumulated. So if you had 60 or more sick days you can take up to 60 days and get paid for all of them. If you have less than 60 you can still take 60 days but you will only be paid for the amount of sick days you have

Re: Teacher's Maternity Leave?

Im in NYC DOE. Our maternity leave is using up our sick days. You use up all your sick days you banked and then you can borrow up to 20 days to equal to 6 or 8 weeks in total. If however one of those weeks is a vacation, you do not use your sick days but it DOES get counted toward your maternity leave....

Re: Teacher's Maternity Leave?

For NYC, you get 6-8 weeks depending on the birth. You use all your sick days first. Then you can barrow up to I think 20-25 days. If you have a vaginal birth and you want to take 8 weeks then you only get to use sick days for 6 and you dont get paid for the other two. FM me if you have question.

Re: Teacher's Maternity Leave?

LI district here:

We got 6 weeks paid for vaginal birth, 8 weeks paid for c-section as long as you had the days in your bank. However, if you were out with further complications and had a doctor's note you would continue to get paid (as long as you have enough days in your bank).

Other than that you are entitled to FMLA for 12 weeks - protecting your job and benefits.

We also get the option of up to 2 school years of unpaid leave per child.

Re: Teacher's Maternity Leave?

I just met with my Superintendent yesterday. He explained to me that our district gives 6 weeks paid leave (as long as you have enough days in your bank) I think I have over 115 saved however, can only use 6 weeks worth. Chat Icon

If you have worked for the district for 7 years (of course this is my 7th year) you are entitled to an additional 6 weeks paid through FMLA.

Not much of this helps me though since I am due at the end of May. My superintendent said that since I don't intend to return the following year, I cannot use the FMLA time.

Depends on the district. Where do you work?

Re: Teacher's Maternity Leave?

My district works as the above posters listed. I'm having a c-section so I could get 8 weeks paid....however I only have 25 days in the bank so I will only get paid for 5 weeks. I wish my district let us borrow days.
