Teachers...

How many times a year do you have to be observed (non-tenured)? How many of those observations are unannounced?
For me, we're observed 6 times, and my first one was Wednesday. It was unannounced Chat Icon

Re: Teachers...

When you say unannounced, do you mean informal observations? I am not sure how often those are done. I think we had to have 2 or 3 formals if we were untenured. I teach in NYC.

Re: Teachers...

before I was tenured it was 4 times a year. @ announced and 2 unannounced. Then my tenure year I had a pop in from the superintendent.

Non tenured teachers in my district are observed 3 times. They usually warn us for formal observations.

I was observed formally by the superintendent and got nearly a month's notice!

Tenured teachers are observed one time.

We also have a mid year review and a end of year review.

6 TIMES!!! That is truly horrible!

Re: Teachers...

when I was non-tenured, 3 formal times- for all 3 years of being non-tenured... the 2nd year you have 1 unannounced drop in by superintenant and the other 2 from your principal. Now that I'm tenured, only 1 time, but it's my choice if I want it announced or not.

Re: Teachers...

This is my third year in a NYC school and I have been observed once each year.

As a NYC DOE teacher you should NEVER sign an observation 'grade'(S or U) unless it is an announced observation. Administation is required to have pre and post-observation meetings with you.

Re: Teachers...

When I worked in NYC it was 1 time, announced. Anyone could pop in at any time, but they weren't allowed to write it up as a formal observation.

Where I work now, untenured, I was observed 4 times, with a mid year and an end year review and tenured it's one time a year. Like in NYC anyone can pop in at any time, but they aren't allowed to write it up as a formal observation.

I can't believe that in some districts they will pop in and count it as a formal observation! Aren't there any pre and post observation conferences?

Re: Teachers...

By unannounced, i meant that my principal came in, stayed for the whole lesson. On her way out, she told me that she was going to write it up. So it will count as one of my observations. On top of the 6 observations, I also have pop in's. For those, she only stays 5, 10 minutes.
I just hope if she thought the lesson was bad, she wouldn't write it up. Especially being my first one of the year. I hope she would speak to me about it. It's so nerve wracking!
