Teachers - question for you!

When you are teaching, is your classroom door generally locked?? I usually leave my unlocked, but my school has now stated that all classroom doors should be locked while we are teaching.

Do you lock yours?? Isn't it a big hassle when students need to use the bathroom, get a drink of water, etc??

Thanks!!

Karen

Wow that's really weird that u have to keep it locked. No honestly I never lock it. What's the reason for having the door locked?? Have there been intruders?

Re: Teachers - question for you!

I never lock my door... but the district i student taught in had to have theirs locked at all times.

they could go out from the inside though, so we'd just prop the door open when they'd use the bathroom.

Mine is never locked; in fact, it's usually wide open. I'm in private school...maybe the rules are different in some public Chat Icon

We are not allowed to have the door locked while in the room with the children, I believe it's a legal thing...

Was there an incident with intruders???

No, actually the opposite happened. There was a fight in one of the rooms, and a teacher next door tried to get in and stop the fight, but the teacher's door was locked. Kinda freaked us all out, but our district reiterated the "lock the door" policy. Personally, mine is always unlocked. I just wasn't sure if this was a common thing. I know some of my teammates keep their door locked.

The only reason people could come up with, was in the event of a lock-down (which happens like 2x a year with drills) the door must be locked. If a lock-down is announced, then we lock our doors and cover the windows. I'm really not comfortable having my door locked.

Our doors are never supposed to be locked. If you dont mind me asking, where do you teach?

Honestly, I would prefer not to say on a public forum, especially since I am going against district policy by not having my door locked Chat Icon .

Re: Teachers - question for you!

We have to keep ours locked. We actually had a situatation earlier in the year when a parent got passed security and was screaming through the halls and it was a good thing the doors were locked.

In my first school there was so much mismanagement and kids were always in the halls. If my door was not locked I would have random kids just walking into my room and refusing to leave. Nearly all of us locked our doors. I don't now and I don't think we are allowed to.

Re: Teachers - question for you!

we all keep our doors unlocked and propped open. They are supposed to be locked and shut according to the district, but they havent enforced that yet. I hope they never! I'd feel like a prisoner! What a pain for kids or yourself having to open the door anytime anyone comes to it. We do keep ALL doors locked that go to the outside of the building except one front door where we have security- errrr, well by security we have a much older woman with a desk to check you in and make sure you don't go down the halls without permission.
