Teacher moms....
How long before your due date are you taking maternity leave?
Here's my predicament: I'm due June 21. My spring concert is May 28. Yikes. Kinda close, no? I know everyone's experience is different so we can't predict how long I'll go and how I'll be that late in my pregnancy.
Would you recommend I move my concert date back? Or should I play it by ear? I'm a little nervous proposing this to my principal. I know she'll be supportive but she may want to just take a chance and see how I am....
TIA!

Re: Teacher moms....
I plan on working up until my due date, if possible. If you think your principal will be supportive of you, then maybe you should just tell her that you've been thinking about this. I also have a supportive principal and this is what I would do. It couldn't hurt to just have the conversation with her.

Re: Teacher moms....
DS was due on JUne 28 and I worked right up until finals week. I felt great, didn't use up my days and it really helped me to keep busy.
Now is due in July (such a teacher in how I planned them ) and I plan to work up to the end.
I think the May concert day should be fine.
Good luck!

Im 36 weeks and still working.. I do have to say though... because of my swelling and stuff, I would be going out early if it wasnt for the break. I feel fine and wanted to work till the very end, but thats not happening!

Re: Teacher moms....
I am due on Tuesday and still working! I think your concert day should be fine-it's 3 weeks before your due date, though anything can happen...
The only thing is that it's going to be very hot and you're going to be very pregnant--that may make you want to move the date back a couple of weeks...

That's a whole month before your due date...unless you're on bed rest you should be fine. I wouldn't bring it up to your principal now, you'll be 35/36 weeks then...aside from being large and in charge and barring any complications, you should be able to make it until your due date, unless you have time you can and want to take before summer vacations starts.
I plan on working until this baby comes out. I'm not going to take leave early just to sit home and wait, unless my body or OB tells me to make different plans.

Re: Teacher moms....
I think playing by ear is a good idea. Its still early. You never know what is going to happen.....if you propose earlier it may not be a good time for you, but maybe May 28th will be great! If you really forsee a problem because of something happening, you can mention it to the principal then.

Re: Teacher moms....
I think you should be fine. I plan on going out a little early only because I won't use many days for maternity leave because there are only five days of school left after my due date. But I think you should be fine for a May 28th concert. Personally, being due the day before you, I am probably going to work until the beginning of final exam week. But we shall see.

I'm doing the same. I am due March 6, and I'm working until 2/27, a week before...but if my dr. tell s me otherwise, I'll stop earlier. I don't want to sit home and wait either...I think I'll drive myself nuts!

Re: Teacher moms....
I'm not a teacher, but my doctor said that most docs don't recommend starting ML until at least your 38th week if it's a health pregnancy. Otherwise, you may be sitting around bored, the baby could arrive late and for many people, you will be losing out on pay!

Re: Teacher moms....
My last pregnancy I was due Jan. 6th and I went out the second week in Dec. but I could have gone longer. I would have lost money however since I pay for private disability and they paid me in addition to my sick time each day. My district allows up to 4 weeks before your due date. Its a little different in CA than in NY due to disability being private.
I think that date would be fine- I could have continued working but once they pointed out it would cost me money- out I went!
I also had over 60 sick days in the bank and realized when would I ever be taking them in the future so I just did it.

Re: Teacher moms....
I'm a teacher and I was due May 12th... I wanted to work until my due date. By the time the end of april came around i had had it. So i put in for my last day to be Friday, May 2nd. That day i work I started getting contractions, left at lunch, and had the baby that night! So I worked up until I gave birth (literally!) but i did not plan it that way!!
I just know that by the end of pregnancy i was extremely uncomfortable and tired and could not wait to get the baby out!
good luck

Re: Teacher moms....
Last time baby was due July 1 & my last day was June 1 (BUT only b/c I had a bunch of sick days I'd lose anyway, b/c I was leaving the school, so I took the entire month of June off).
This time DC is due May 11 & I plan on working right up until the end & I'll probably come back in June for a few days PT to help w/ their stepping up (their last day is June 11).

I'm not a teacher but I work in a school as a school psychologist. My due date is June 5, 2009 and I hope to take off the entire month of June. Especially since I can't use my sick time past June 26.
