Tea length dress

Where should it hit you on your leg?

I had to buy a bridesmaid dress one size too big since I was 5 months pregnant when we ordered them. The dress is supposed to be tea length but it is hitting me below my calf muscle. It is a few inches above my ankle. I think it is supposed to hit mid calf. Can someone tell me what tea length really is.

TIA

Re: Tea length dress

I think you could get away with where it's laying but if you wanted to have it shortened you could do that too.

IMO tea length is anywhere between mid-calf to ankle length.

Re: Tea length dress

I think that you should probably have the dress shortened a couple of inches. Sounds like it's a little too long.

Re: Tea length dress

Thanks. I was thinking of having it shortened but I did not want to look ridiculous next to the other girls if I was wrong on where tea length hits.

It is one size too big to begin with so I am assuming that is another reason that it needs to be shortened. I will add that to my list of alterations.

I agree, you have to be careful w/ tea length - it can easliy look frumpy. I think you're right to go a bit shorter

I wore a tea length in a wedding last year and it was mid calf on all of us.

Re: Tea length dress

Can I make a suggestion?

You might want to speak to the bride about what length she wants everyone's dress.

I would think a "set length" for everyone's dress will give a more uniform appearance even if not everyone is the same height. KWIM?

Re: Tea length dress

I have read that the most flattering place for it to hit is the widest part of your calf- right about half way.

I wore tea length as a BM- everyone had it hemmed to hit there and it looked good. I actually think it would look odder for girls of all heights to have it hit at the same place....

For what it's worth, I am around the height that most dresses are cut for and tea length hits me right at mid calf...for some shorter girls, it might hit just above the ankle, not very flattering.

Re: Tea length dress

Thanks for all the suggestions. The bride is my sister and she could care less. I have planned half this wedding and loved every second of it. I had to buy the dress one size too big. I think if I bought it in my true size it would be hitting me mid calf but because I was 5 months preggo at the time and not sure if I would lose all the weight I played it safe and ordered one size larger.

I am going to have it taken in on the sides and taken up so it hits me mid calf. I put it on and raised the dress and there is a huge difference in how it looks on me when it hits my mid calf. 100x better. Right now it looks more like a poodle skirt on the bottom because of the a-line cut and where it hits on my leg.Chat Icon
