Taxes rejected..penalty question
I got married at the end of last year and never changed my name with SS. DH and I filed our taxes jointly and I used my married name. Today I got an email from TaxAct saying that my federal return was rejected because my birthdate, SSN, and Name don't match the IRS masterfile.
DH is checking the returns now for typos, but I don't think we made any. We had to pay A LOT. Since we have to resubmit are they going to charge us late penalties even though we originally filed on time? Has anyone else had their returns rejected because of maiden/married name issues?

I never changed my last name on my SS card either so my accountant submitted it under my maiden name.
I would call the IRS to ask them about any penalties. They may be able to give you an extension.

unfortunately when you e-file, they are very picky as far as information matching up. you might have been better off paper filing. i assume you e-filed yesterday if you are getting this email today?

Re: Taxes rejected..penalty question
i would think that is why it was rejected. if you haven't legally changed yoru name, it should have been listed as your maiden name.
i hope it works out for you and you don't have to pay!! i don't know the answer to that, but i bet there is an 800 nuimber on the IRS web site that you could call and ask that question.
good luck!

Until you change your name with SS you have to file your taxes using your maiden name. Since you did file on time, I don't think there will be a late penalty but you can call to double check that.

Re: Taxes rejected..penalty question
Thanks. We filed on the 14th. DH works for himself and I was waiting for him to get all his business info together. I lost my original SS card and I've been lazy about getting a new one.
I left a message for my sister (she works at the IRS) to ask about the penalties but haven't heard back yet.

Re: Taxes rejected..penalty question
if i were you i'd resubmit the e-file asap.
if the state or irs comes back to you, then i'd reply by explaining to them what happened and provide your e-file confirmation as proof that you submitted the forms on time.

DH is refiling right now. He called the IRS and they said it will be late, the original submission doesn't count.

yeah, they're real PITA's, those IRS folks.
regardless of what the guy on the phone said, let them come back to you officially via paper notice. i would then write or call and explain what happened and how you made a good-faith effort to file on time. you may get lucky. it happens.
worse come to worst, you'll be assessed a one-day penalty and maybe some interest. i wouldn't sweat over it. just get that e-file in TODAY!
