Tax Grievances
If you filed this year, have you heard anything yet? We filed before the deadline and nothing yet.

we are in town of islip, heard it was denied months ago, and I missed the deadline to file the appeal with the court, so mad at myself that I missed it, I would call your town and find out what is going on.
Just wanted to add that we bought this year for much less than the assessed market value- don't know how they can justify the denial

In the grievance stage, I would say about 95% of the applications get denied. Most appeals have to go to the Court level before they are even addressed.

If you filed this year, you actually filed for the 2011/12 tax year. You won't hear anything until closer to the final roll being published (March 1, 2011).

According to the Nassau website it can take up to 15 months   
When I log in to the application, it still says received.

Yes, we filed within the time frame for next year. I just thought we would have heard by now if it would be reduced.

good to know. In May they said the end of August.
We grieved 2 years ago and were denied, but I just threw something together last minute - not sure I blame them!

I've won twice in four years on one property w/Mark Lewis and I won once on another property & I'm in the process of greiving again with them.
My taxes on our priimary residence are nearly $2000 less per year than they were when we bought in 2004 because of greivances.

You can grieve every year.
You can grieve every year MOST of the time. However, if you are also grieving a Village case OR the case was settled at Court (after going before a Judicial Hearing Officer), most of the time you will be bound by a one-year moratorium on filing (the Town can't raise your assessment and you can't protest for a year).

by law you will find out when the final assessment roll is published. In Suffolk that's usually July 1 however, most towns were late this year. As of last week, Huntington's assessment roll is supposed to be finalized by Friday. If you are denied at grievance level, from the date they finalize, you have 30 days to file a petition with the Court.

Where are you located? I'm guessing not Nassau since you've heard already.
