Tantrums and holding breath
Has anyone's DC ever held their breath during a tantrum and passed out? Tonight, DD had a tantrum (typical 2.5 year old wanting to get her way), and I was ignoring her like I normally do when she does that. She was laying on the floor on her back, and went from screaming her head off, to silence with her eyes shut. It lasted only a few seconds, I yelled her name and she opened her eyes, and was totally fine the rest of the night. It was so scary though! I called my Ped who said its not uncommon, and it will probably be a one time thing-could've been that she was on her back. It totally freaked me out. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Re: Tantrums and holding breath
DS is only 9 months, so his version of a tantrum is a bit different, but yeah he holds his breath when he's really angry. I read its common, from "what to expect in the first year" so I'm not worried.
But he also, holds his breath when he trips and falls, or is scared by something.
But he's doing it a lot less, since I start acknowledging that he's upset. Like "I know your mad, I know your upset, I know you want to scream, I hear you, I understand, I know you want your way!" and I say it with emphasis and simply and he doesn't last long in silence, usually turns into a whine. Then I say " but we cannot do this, we can do this or this" Then he's so focused on what to choose he gets over it.
IDK but it works for now. Like I said we are only 9m, so its probably totally different.

Re: Tantrums and holding breath
Thanks for your input. Hopefully it was a one time thing-we have our fair share of tantrums over here and it never happened before!

Re: Tantrums and holding breath
My DS doesn't do this but my parents love to remind me that this was a favorite of mine growing up. Whenever I threw a tantrum and they ignored me I would hold my breath until I passed out. The first few times my parents rushed me to the doctor and he wound up telling them that I was just being a brat and that although not common some kids do this. He told them not to worry and that once I passed out my bodies natural instincts would kick in and I would start breathing and that there was basically nothing for them to worry about except that they have a very stubborn daughter. Now whenever my DS throws a tantrum they like to remind me of what a pleasant child I was at his age lol
