talk to me about starting solids
we did the cereals, and now we've started making the fruits & veggies! so far DS has had carrots and bananas, and i have sweet potato all ready to go in the freezer. but my list of acceptable starters i was given by the pediatrician varies slightly from the list in the baby bullet book.
ped said to stick w only "yellow" stuff to start (i've heard of recommendations to go in order of food colors) but baby bullet says peas are ok now and doesn't seem to follow a color guide.
what are you serving your LO for the first few months, and when do we get to move up to the next group of foods?
oh and anyone else making the baby food? i thought it would be annoying but i love it - the baby bullet is like my new fav toy!

Re: talk to me about starting solids
I made all of my older son's baby food, and am going to start doing the same for my younger son within the next week. I used www.wholesomebabyfood.com as my guide. It has all the information you could possibly need to know! I never heard of the color thing. The only thing our ped said when we began was to stick to only Stage 1 foods.

Re: talk to me about starting solids
My ped never said anything about colors. He just suggested alternating fruit, veggie, fruit, veggie and so on.
I didn't make my own food, so we moved to Stage 2 once we had tried all the Stage 1 foods.

Re: talk to me about starting solids
I made all of DDs baby food. I expected it to be stressful, especially since I work FT, but it was super easy and I'm so glad I did it.
Every ped is different. Even within the practice I go to the peds have different opinions about going in color order. I didn't intend to, mainly because my DH turned orange as a baby from all the orange veggies. But our regular ped didn't think it was necessary either. So, we started with sweet potatoes, green beans, butternut squash, and peas for veggies and for fruits it was banana, apples, pears and peaches.

Re: talk to me about starting solids
we started with oranges and yellows ( squash, carrots, sweet potato, apples, peaches, pears, bananas) and then moved on to greens (peas, green beans, avocado) and everything else, once DS had tried each one for 3-4 days with no reactions.
i just tried introducing mango and i've let DS suck on a melon here and there

Re: talk to me about starting solids
thanks for the responses!
i have another question...we've been giving him solids 2x each day, late morning and early evening. but so far we've been doing cereal for one feeding and a fruit/veggie for the other. is this necessary? or is it ok to be doing just fruits and veggies for all meals. and when will/did you bump it up to more than 2 solids a day?
i will check that site one of you ladies posted which i'm sure will be very helpful, but it'd also like to hear what you ladies are doing! thank you!!

Re: talk to me about starting solids
I didn't do any color order with either of my boys. At 4 months, we did cereals, and fruits. At 5 months, we added veggies, and at 6 months , we did meats.
I did enjoy making their food. I did both jars, and made some

Re: talk to me about starting solids
We didn't do anything in color order, just gave her new foods every few days. She really liked everything and no reaction to anything. I always gave a lil oatmeal with the 2 solids, she loved it and filled her up.

Re: talk to me about starting solids
after 1 week of oatmeal once a day we bumped it up to twice a day. we did one fruit or veggie a day until we knew he wasn't allergic. once we went through everything, we were giving and still are, a fruit and oatmeal in the morning and a veggie and oatmeal at night. around 7 months the ped said we could add yogurt as "lunch". i think we will probably start meat after his 9 month check up.

he's 5 months.
and i'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but when you ladies give oatmeal and fruit/veggie together, you mix them together? or you give a few tbsp of oatmeal followed by the fruit/veggies (separate)?

I give both at a feeding and alternate spoonfuls.
I sometimes will give just one but always the oatmeal at night cause I feel like it keeps him full better.
I was never given order for the fruits and veggies....my ped just said try all of them (I am not making my food) and by his 6 mon visit he should be through them all.

Re: talk to me about starting solids
we are doing oatmeal, rice, barley for cereals, since 4 months. then we started adding veggies first, leaving 3 days in between each one to make sure that DS had no allergic reactions (if we start another one right away, we wouldn't be sure which one he may be allergic to)... we weren't told to go in any color order, but my SIL who is a nurse (so helpful having her!) told me that you should start with the more bitter tasting veggies first (peas, green beans) because the baby won't like them after tasting sweet foods (pediatrician also reccommended feeding DS veggies first, then fruits)...
we make our own, just using a mini food processor... its so much easier. But I do keep a stock of some organic veggies and fruits in the cabinet just in case i don't get to it...

My ped had us do cereal one time per day for a month before moving to veggies and a 2nd meal. And then we started a 3rd meal at almost 9 months. Ped wanted us to wait until 9 months, but a few weeks before that DD was trying to grab someone's lunch at daycare so we started giving her lunch.
You don't have to give cereal at all. You can completely skip it and just give veggies and fruits. I kept giving DD oatmeal because she LOVED it. When I gave both, I would mix it together if it was fruit and alternate if it was a veggie.

Thanks...and that makes sense about mixing fruit w oatmeal but doing veggies separate!
All helpful responses, thank you ladies!

AT 5 months, I think you might be okay with just the two meals. Ask your ped at 6 month visit about a 3rd meal.
I never mixed them together, because the cereal has the iron in it, so I wanted to know they were getting all of it. Then I would give the fruit seperate. At 5 months, I did oatmeal and a fruit in the am, and then rice and a veggie in the evening. I want to say at like 7 months, I added the lunch part. A yogurt, or fruit/veggie combo. By the time they started meats, I only gave cereal once per day, because the meat had the iron.
If he is taking two meals, and loving it, then you are doing great!

ok, thanks. when you gave/give the cereal & fruit or veggies at the same meal, do you also give formula? i thought i read that they still need to take a bottle w their meals, but i don't know that he would drink much after having both cereal and fruit/veggies.

Re: talk to me about starting solids
I started with cereal (oatmeal and bananas)He loved oatmeal and rice cereal but suddenly gags when eating bananas. Then apples ( he did'nt like it and "I think" he broke out so I stopped) Pears (he loves) carrots (loves) sweet potatoes (loves) and watch out for poopy diapers! bananas (nope!) sweet peas (constipated) ...prunes (okay) watch for poops! and now we're up to squash which he seems to like. I mix fruits with oatmeal and veggies with rice cereal. DS is up to 2 feedings per day. Now when I want to give him a day off from new foods, I have the aforementioned list to pick from.
ETA: tried making my own foods (with apples) and it did not go well. Plus we just bought a house and moved in so there was no way I could make his food. I found beechnut stages has pretty basic ingredients and the foods taste pretty good so I'm sticking with them for now till I get settled.
Also, sometimes when I am out I just feed him a veggie or fruit from the jar and skip the cereal. It's good as snacks, too now that he's teething and refusing bottles.

I usually wait a little while, like 15mins, to half hour. If it close to nap or bedtime, I have given it immediately. DS2 (9 months) usually has a bottle right when he wakes up, then breakfast after. Basically, they don't want you to skip a bottle because of the food. They are still getting their nutrition from the formula, and the meals are an "extra"
