Talk to me about getting your tubes tied

I am having my third child, and third c-section. I always thought my husband would just get snipped but part of me is thinking I should just get it over with since I'll be open on the table.

I'm obviously going to speak to my doctor about this on Monday but would love to hear some experiences of moms who went through this.

Did it make your recovery worse?

Did you regret it? I know I don't want 4 kids, and I know I don't want 4 csections so this child is it for me whether it's a boy or a girl.

ANything else you can share?

I'm so scared I'll have second thoughts after the fact but meanwhile I know there is NO SHOT that I will have a 4th child.

I didn't have mine when I had a c-section but I had it when I had a cyst removed and a d and c, so there was no more recovery then would have been otherwise.

We have twin boys and I knew we did not want any more so I never regretted my decision even for a second after doing it.

Re: Talk to me about getting your tubes tied

A friend of mine had her 4th kid last year. She said she was DONE and had to get really effective birth control that didn't make her crazy. her dr asked her if she wanted her tubes tied, and she said no, and gave the funniest--yet i get it-reason. She said what if my husband dies and i fall in love with a millionaire who wants more kids and money and help isn't an issue? Now- ok pretty far fetched and morbid, but at the same time, I get the anything can happen and you don't know how you will feel down the road mentality. Personally, I can't ever get my tubes tied. If DH wants a vasectomy (which is what we talked about), I support it. But, I can't do anything like that to myself permanently.

Re: Talk to me about getting your tubes tied

Funny, my sister just got it done yesterday. She's given birth to 5 kids (the 5th just last night and then got her tubes tied).
She feels pretty well now. I know she'd love to have more kids, but this last pregnancy was risky. She also has 6 (1 is a stepdaughter) beautiful and healthy kids.

I'm having mine done with this one.

My doc told me it will have no effect on my recovery at all.

I didn't do it after my 3rd c-section; it would have been too much for me to bear, emotionally. Luckily, my DH was on the same page even though we do not plan on any more children.

But if you were planning on doing something permanent anyway, IMO, YOU ((eta) as opposed to your DH) should do it since--as you said--you'll be open on the table.

I have several friends who have had their tubes tied and they are SOO happy with their decision and have had no issues. In fact, they all urged me to do the same! Chat Icon

All good points, thank you all. I'm going to talk to my doctor on Monday and get his perspective. I'm also going to talk to my husband about it since he never heard me mention the words "Tubes tied" before Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Talk to me about getting your tubes tied

Same as you - third child, third section - DONE! I discussed it with OB at first prenatal appt this time. He (mind you - HE, not she Chat Icon) said I will never know any different except that I'll never get pregnant.

There is the route of IVF if you get into a predicament where you simply must have another child (it bypasses the tubes so you're able to carry normally).

Re: Talk to me about getting your tubes tied

With my EDD looming, the thought entered my head, since there is talk of me going early (and a c/s) because of my high BP and GD. But I just can't do it - and I now know I am done. I am going to be 40 this summer and I had enough complications this pregnancy to last me awhile. We've discussed the big V for DH and while he was open to it, he chickened out and now were expecting our 3rd. I am not leaving the decision to him again. I am pretty certain I will get the Mirena again. I Ioved it and it's our safest bet. Good luck to you in your decision.

Re: Talk to me about getting your tubes tied

I had mine done with DS #2. No regrets about getting it done. After all was said and done I realized i didn't want to be the mom of 3, so I'm happy with my two boys.

I did have a tougher recovery the 2nd time around but it wasn't because of my tubes, it was because I developed a seroma which is common with abdominal surgery.

My doc asked me a million times if I was sure even right before I did it because I was 35 yrs old. I told him that I was absolutely sure.

Re: Talk to me about getting your tubes tied

Im having it done in February when i give birth to baby number two. I also need to have a cyst removed so while im open I figured this is the best decision for me and dh. We are not youngChat Icon I am going to be 37 and my dh is going to be 40 this year. We both know that having 3 kids just isnt for us. My doctor said it shouldnt effect anything in terms of recovery.

Re: Talk to me about getting your tubes tied

I had my second c-section on 9/7 with my second DS and got my tubes tied right there while she had me opened up. Made no difference in my recovery at all that I noticed and I have no regrets! I figured since I was going to be opened up already, might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone. So, I did it. And haven't looked back!

Re: Talk to me about getting your tubes tied

I haven't had it done, but was considering it after my 2nd because it was a CS. Ultimately I am unsure if I want a 3rd so I opted not to, but do a google search of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. It is very common and I am one of those people that if a complication could arise, I am the .05% that will have it, lol.

This is the original post that alerted me to the condition.
