Talk to me about diaper genies...
Some say they are great - some say they are waste and smell really bad.
The problem is I've had about 50/50 feedback and I'm wondering if it's even worth to keep on the registry.

Re: Talk to me about diaper genies...
i dont have one but it seemed like more people i spoke to with kids said dont bother. They said its better just to get rid of the diaper right away because they start to smell. So i didnt register for it

Yeah, yesterday I babysat for someone and they had one, and I can smell it in the room. Other places I've been to I can't smell it.

Re: Talk to me about diaper genies...
We have two one on each level. I was not about to go running downstairs every time my DS had a dirty diaper. You change a nb every time they eat which is every 2 hours in the beginning! That's a lot of diapers to keep running outside. We put a deodorized in the bottom of the genie and never had a problem.

Re: Talk to me about diaper genies...
my sister convinced me, she swears by it. she insists it doesn't smell, and that whenever she puts diapers in her regular garbage pail (with the intention of emptying it at the end of the day or whatever), the regular garbage in the kitchen will start to smell. and she also convinced me that i wouldn't want to be running outside with every diaper, esp. not in the winter.
also DH wanted one.
I'll give it a shot and if I hate it, at least I know from my own experience.

We registered for one. I do plan on emptying it often but figure rather then leave the baby alone or have to take him out w/me in the winter for every dirty diaper I will use this and just empty it often to avoid any smell.

Re: Talk to me about diaper genies...
never used one...the concept seemed pretty gross to me.
Every diaper went into the blue disinfectant bags and then into the garbage and then outside.

I agree.
I purchased a bunch of these. I will tie up the dirty diaper and throw it out in the kitchen trash which goes out almost daily. Our house is small so walking to the trash is not a problem.

Re: Talk to me about diaper genies...
We have the first one and the Diaper Genie II. I prefer the II, it has a foot pedal to open it so it's hands free which is awesome. It doesn't smell unless it's really full. With two kids I can't see taking a dirty diaper outside, multiple times a day. We empty it maybe once every 2-3 days.

Re: Talk to me about diaper genies...
I have 2 of the diaper genie IIs. I love it! One is in my living room... had it for a year & it really doesn't smell at all.
The only way I see them smelling is if the plastic side walls get dirty...

We plan on doing the same thing. Also, I was at BJ's the other day and noticed in the baby aisle they have these deodorized bags...i think it was $5 for about 200 bags....not positivie.

Re: Talk to me about diaper genies...
I decided not to register for one because my sister had it and told me not to bother because of the smell, etc. but I also think no matter what it will smell anyway, so we may need to make frequent trips to the dumpster.

This my experience of them. My sister had one for my niece and had to stop using it.

Re: Talk to me about diaper genies...
We have two, one on each floor. My son is 18 months and we've used it since the beginning with no issues! The only time I have noticed a smell is if there are dirty diapers in it already and you open it to put another diaper in, the smell lingers for a minute or two after you close it. No big deal IMO. It's never smelled just from sitting there closed with dirty diapers in it!
