Swingset... what's under?

If you don't have grass under the swing set what do you have? Where we put the swing set there's no grass. We took down trees, but bc it got so much shade there's no grass there. Don't want to sod now so thinking of doing small pebbles (called pea gravel) or the rubber mulch. I just remember when I worked at a daycare the parents always complained about the rubber mulch getting everywhere and doesn't look as nice. Plus, the boys are getting older I don't think it's as necessary.
