Swine flu diagnosis without a test?
My daycare provider called me this AM to tell me that her 8 YO daughter had 104 fever and that she was taking her to the doctor
She just called me and told me that her DD has the swine flu but said the doctor did not test her to confirm it
the doctor said that here in Charlotte they are seeing alot of swine flu cases and since she has flu like symptoms, they are saying she has the swine flu
Mikayla had diarrhea onm saturday and is saying that her stomach hurts still so I am taking both kids to the ped tomorrow

Re: Swine flu diagnosis without a test?
My 10 yr old cousin had it a few weeks ago down in NC. She was tested and had it. She was the first case in her school to have it. I don't understand how they could diagnose it without testing.

Re: Swine flu diagnosis without a test?
I heard the same
Most clinics here in San Antonio are longer testing.. just diagnosing with 'swine flu'
Some will send out swabs but most are going forward with a swine flu verdict.
My coworker and her son are two cases.
ETA: they said it was too many cases to keep testing them all so they stopped.
Makes me feel SOO much better doesn't it?

Re: Swine flu diagnosis without a test?
From what I remember from the spring, the only way to be diagnosed with swine flu is to have ur tests sent to the CDC

Re: Swine flu diagnosis without a test?
My one yr old nephew was diagnosed in the spring with a type A flu (he had a test) and the ped said it was swine flu. They did not bother to test because treatment is the same and swine test takes 3 weeks to get results/

Re: Swine flu diagnosis without a test?
My friend, also in NC, had her kids diagnosed without confirming it with a test. Apparently, it is so common, they are not confirming it anymore.
So how do they know if it is the regular flu or swine flu? I guess maybe it doesnt matter since the treatment is probably the same?
Good luck tomorrow at the dr.

Re: Swine flu diagnosis without a test?
IMO you need to be tested to confirm that you have it otherwise you are guessing.
Typically diarrhea and stomach problems are not flu symptoms though so you should be fine.

Re: Swine flu diagnosis without a test?
It is my understanding from the peds and doctors I have spoken with (mostly family members) that even in NY they are no longer routinely testing for the Swine Flu UNLESS you are in a high risk category. Otherwise I think since it is early for flu season a lot are assuming if you have the flu it is swine.

Re: Swine flu diagnosis without a test?
Most places are no longer testing because the "seasonal" flu is not really circulating yet so right now if you have the flu it is probably swine flu.
While vomitting and diarhea are not symptoms of the regular flu they are symptoms of H1N1.
