SUmp Pmups
So, we were bidding on a house and may have a deal, but we're concerned about the basement and water. It has 2 sump pumps that were going off quite a lot. ANyone have 2 sump pumps in their basement?

We have 2, but used to have 3 at one time. (We used to get quite a bit of flooding, but we knew that when we purchased the house based on the visual evidence.) They used to go off a lot before we fixed our gutters & drainage and regraded our property. Now they're dry and have been for quite a while. We've been discussing closing them up.

I grew up with one, then my dad installed a second one to help the first.

Re: SUmp Pmups
Is the house in Smithtown, Ronkonkoma,Lake Grove or Hauppague?Only because i lived in smithtown and the water table is so high there that people run the pumps 24 hours a day during rainy periods, and the septic would need to be emptied every month or so due to high water table, At $500 a pop.It has been quite dry lately so i would be careful that you are being told the truth. It was honestly a nightmare dealing with the water problem and a health hazard.Infact a neighbor who got one of the smithtown politicians on the side to privately ask what he would do was advised to sell during a drought.

True but not in all parts of Smithtown. Do your research. It's hit or miss.

The house is in Westchester actually, but thank you for the warning. That's what we're thinking here, we'd have to empty it and it fills up fast. A headache just waiting to happen.

Re: SUmp Pmups
I live in Western CT and I know most of neighbors have them because of the terrain. On our home inspection, we noticed water in the basement. The previous owners claim they never had a problem. However they had a humidifier running 24/7. We investigated further and found that our home is on a huge rock and the water is coming up through it. We put in one sump pump, dug a trench and had French drains installed outside. After completing this work our house has been bone dry. My DH is handy and was able to do this work himself. The area were the sump pump were installed is unfinished. We plan on finishing it one day. The basement wasn't a deal breaker for us because the house was over 3000sq Ft not including the basement. If I was planning on using the basement for space, it would have been a deal breaker.
Is this house down a hill? That could increase the need for sump pumps.
Good luck. HTH.
