Suggestions needed

Is there a nice way to turn down hand-me-down offers of baby stuff? This is our first baby and I'm really looking forward to all the fun getting ready stuff that goes along with it. I suddenly have found our families offering to give us all of their old baby stuff. My sister wants me to take her crib that she used for all three of my nephews. In fact, my parents are picking it up tonight. My mom, who's very thrify, keeps getting stuff that is gently used from a friend of hers whose daughter had twins last year. I don't want to be rude, and I know they are trying to be helpful but it's not as if we are in need. I would rather see the stuff go to someone who does need it. Also, I don't share the same taste as these people. The same thing happened when my husband and I bought our house this past summer. I felt like my house became a chance for our families to clean out their attics and basements.

Re: Suggestions needed

Can you accept it and pass on what you don't want to keep?

As far as the crib goes, I would just nicely explain you want to get a full matching set for your DC's bedroom, but you really appreciate it.

Re: Suggestions needed

Can you suggest that at least some of it can stay at Grandma's house so that you don't have to tote stuff around when visiting? Thats where I'm putting our "donated" toys and stuff.

I would also ask them if they don't mind if you donate it to a preschool, church or charity - "if you find you can't use it".

WIth regards to the crib - I would be concerned if 3 babies have already used it. toddlers bite on the rails and pull on them to stand - which weakens the material over time. I read that somewhere (maybe baby bargains?) I would tell them that. In fact, I had asked my friend if I could use her crib that her DS used and she told me that he basically destroyed it and wouldn't give it to anyone due to safety.

Re: Suggestions needed

If anyone offered them to me - I just told them the truth - knowing my family my son will have a TON of brand new clothes - but thank you so much for the offer.

I am still doing returns -- and I am now the one passing things along to others.

I am a shopaholic - and I want to be the one to buy things for my son. ETA: Just read the part about the crib. Just say - this is your first child - you want to pick out your own furniture.

I like the extra's at grandma's house. We did this. When it comes to furniture with your first baby - I would just be honest. Also, just tell them that you already have so many things already - but thanks.

Accept it and pass on the things you don't want. It was hard for me to say no to people too, so I just took everything. Once my shower is over, we'll see what we don't need and pass along...

ITA! The crib might be tough though. Maybe there is a way you can gently say "thanks for being so generous...we actually picked a new one out recently that we really like and are both excited about it." Maybe?

This is what we did. My boyfriends family passed on so much stuff to us that we just accepted it and then donated it to charity. as far as the bassinet goes - his mom wanted to give us one that she used with the other grandchildren that was reeealllllly old - we told her to keep it in case the baby ever stayed with her.

I think this is the perfect excuse - especially because it's the truth!
