Suggestions for a random "nook" in the wall
I need suggestions on what to do with this random "nook" that we have in our dining area. We had previously been keeping our alcohol collection up there, but I don't know.... Also, I was thinking about adding a shelf in there just to utilize more of the space. But again, I don't know....
HELP!
Here's the nook. I just painted the blond colored wood, white. Don't mind the painting mess.

And here's where it is in the house. It's an open floor plan. This is looking from the living room into the dining area, and the kitchen is on the right. The nook is above the high chair.

I definitely think you should add a shelf. maybe you can store your wine glasses/martini glasses there? Or vases or other collectible type things that you might want to display? or picture frames!

I'd probably shove some house plants there.

I was also going to say a plant.. or maybe a vase with some flowers.. maybe a free-standing picture frame on either side

Do you think the nook was put there for a specific reason when they first built the house in the 50's? Or do you think it's just "decorative"? I never understood why it's there and I HATE it! (DH loves it though...)

Just a suggestion - I would paint the back and the 3/4 sides the color of your trim. I had shadow boxes like that all along my wall and it made such a huge difference in how it looked.
As for what to put inside, maybe layer it with a framed mirror (or a venetian style) add some candle stick holders (chunky) and maybe a cool statue or something. I'm picturing something very mantle like.

Wow... I wonder how this would look. I just painted the trim white so you think maybe I should paint all the walls in the nook white? Hmmmmmmmm.....

I would put a shelf... Previous owners here had somethng *kinda* like that in the kitchen, I painted with my trim color and the inside the color of my sunroom, which is attached to the kitchen to tie it in. I use it now as a place for our dishes and glasses since we don't have a ton of cabinet space, rather than "display".

We're definitely going to put a backsplash back there once we do the backsplash in our kitchen. Your nook looks fabulous!

I'd probably put a shelve & store cook books there, but you could also use it as open shelving like Randi did.
