Suffolk county civil service question
Does anyone know how long you would stay active in their system after you took a test? I can't find this info anywhere and calling and getting someone on the phone is not working out. I am wondering because an employment opportunity I am interested in is up there now and the test is in June but I am not looking to actually be employed for another year or two (home with the kids). I don't want to miss the test and it not be available for a long time but I also want to know if I take it now will I stay active in the system for a few years? Thanks!

I could be wrong, but I think lists are active for 3 years.

It takes a really long time for the list to even be established. I took a test back in 2009. The list was established a year and a half later. I am in the process of having my background investigation done (Not all positions require a background investigation). I expect to be called by the end of this year. It will definitely take some time to even be called and I think the list is then active for a few years after they start calling.

I think it depends on the particular test/position.
I took the clerk typist exam in May 2013 and the eligible list came out in August. I started receiving notifications of vacancies and opportunities to apply immediately. The eligible list will remain until the next list comes out after the new exam, which will be this May.
