Sudden increase in spit up?
DS is 1 month old and EBF. He falls asleep after nursing for 10-15 minutes on one side. I'll burp him and then change his diaper so he's awake enough to nurse on the other side. When I try to burp him, he doesn't burp very often and only occasionally spits up. He tends to spit up if I lie him down too soon after eating. Yesterday, he started spitting up a lot more both in frequency and the amount. He even spit up an hour or two after a feeding, which he hasn't done before.
During two of the afternoon/evening feedings, DS screamed after nursing for less than a minute on the second side. I sat him up to burp him and he spit up a lot. He started rooting again so I tried to feed him. He would suck a few times, scream and then he'd spit up more. This happened 3 or 4 times. He and the burp cloth were soaked in spit up. That was the first time he was really uncomfortable from spitting up. During the night, he was cluster feeding. He kept the milk down until the last feeding. Since then, he has been spitting up a lot during and after a feeding.
Is this normal? DS1 was a happy spitter who would spit up hours after a feeding. He wore bibs constantly because he was always spitting up. I don't remember him ever being uncomfortable the way DS2 was yesterday though. DS2 didn't spit up often and seemed fine until yesterday. I'm a little concerned that he went from barely spitting up to spitting up so much. I don't remember there being such a sudden change with DS1. Is there anything I can do in terms of feeding him to possibly control the spitting up? Did anyone go through something similar?

Re: Sudden increase in spit up?
Both of my sons went through phases as infants where they would spit up a lot. But what would worry me is the fact that you son is uncomfortable. It sounds like it could be either reflux or a milk protein allergy. I would call your ped. Good luck, hope it gets better!

He was ok during the morning and early afternoon feedings yesterday as well as the middle of the night feedings, but a few feedings during the late afternoon/early evening were rough again. He spit up a lot and screamed towards the end of the feedings and while burping him. I feel so bad that he's miserable. I've cut the feedings short even though he's still rooting because within 30 seconds of putting him back on, he pulls off and screams. He's generally ok the first 5-10 minutes of the feeding, but then it becomes really difficult. I miss my content baby. I wish I knew exactly what was wrong so I could fix it.

Re: Sudden increase in spit up?
He just pooped while changing him and it was really loose and watery. He didn't spit up during the early feedings today, but was grunting like crazy during and after some of them. I'm going to see what the ped says. I'm starting to get concerned about a possible milk allergy.

Re: Sudden increase in spit up?
I would ask your doctor if they think it may be pyloric stenosis. DS#2 was never a spitter after eating until he reached 4-5 weeks old. This is a condition that presents itself between 4-6weeks old & it's common in 1st born males. It caused my DS to spit up after every single bottle. He would spit up the entire bottle & was loosing weight. We went to the ped, who sent us to the hospital for an ultrasound on his stomach & they saw it was pyloric stenosis. He had to have a surgery to correct it & now he's doing much better.

DS1 was actually tested for pyloric stenosis, but he ended up just being a happy spitter.
I went to the doctor today. There was no blood in the diaper that I gave them. The doctor thinks DS2 has reflux so we're starting him on Zantac. I hope he starts to feel better soon.
