What is the sales tax in NYS? Is it 8.75?

The tax we pay on stuff is a combination of state and local. I think the state is about 3 or 4% (not sure of the exact #). For example, during the tax free clothing weeks, Nassau county made people pay the local county tax because of its fiscal problems. Whereas in Queens and Suffolk people paid neither local nor state tax at that time.
I live in Putnam now and the tax is a little less than Nassau.

The NYS state part is 4.25%. The total sales tax depends on the local government. It usually comes to 7-8.5 %.

The combined rate--
In Nassau & Suffolk it is 8.625
In NYC it is 8.375
In Westchester it is 7.5 percent. ( except in White , Plains, Yonkers , Mt. Vernon & New Rochelle--there are additional city taxes)
