stroller in the city

I am bringing DD to work with me tomorrow. I usually use the BOB when we go out and about but wonder if the Vista would be better as she can sit up high and straighter to see around...the baskets on both are comparable i think.

any advice?

by the way DD is 2

Re: stroller in the city

I would take your lightest and easiest to fold stroller.

We had 3 strollers when we lived in Manhattan. If we had to travel via subway, bus or taxi, I always took our umbrella stroller. Even the city mini was a bit bulky because I would often have to pick up the child with one hand and the stroller in the other. Elevators can be out of order. I always felt I got stuck with stairs and a stroller. Even a few steps is a pain!

Most of the time, I would just walk an extra 20 blocks and a few avenues to avoid getting on a vehicle because it was such a pain to fold the stroller.

I live in the city and have the Vista. It's great - but as the PP said, if you're getting in and out of taxis, buses, etc., I'd bring an umbrella stroller.

Re: stroller in the city

I am taking the train into the city and then walking everywhere. I was just trying to figure out which type of ride DD would be happiest in and although I have a city mini i hate the basket which is why its between the Vista or the BOB

Everyone we know in Manhattan has a bulky stroller and an umbrella. They leave their Bugaboo, Orbit, Stokke, etc at home if they are getting on a train, bus, or taxi. I would include LIRR on that list. I have the Orbit and even though it is supposedly an easy fold, the heavy weight makes it very inconvenient.

If you are with DH, that is a whole other story. I would just hate to get stuck with carrying a heavy stroller AND a child. Some kind soul would end up helping me but it was a pain in the ass. I would avoid it if possible.

stroller in the city

I have had DS in the city a few times. I ALWAYS use an umbrella. It takes up the least amount of room on the LIRR ( I always sit in the handicapped area. Also, not many subways are handicapped accessible so I would have to carry DS up and down stairs. I have the City Mini as my big stroller which is light but still too heavy for the city IMO when you have a bag or two and are doing it all by yourself.

Also my office building is a PIA to get to the first floor elevator that you need to take to get to the main lobby and transfer to our normal floor elevator and the security yells if you take a stoller on the escalators so the umbrella is easy to fold and jsut carry DS on the escalator up.

Re: stroller in the city

I've always taken the bugaboo with me in the city - I took it up to Boston, Chicago etc .......I'd use the stroller your child is most comfortable in -

the subways aren't too bad to manuver (although I still try to avoid them) I've never done the whole cab thing though
