stressed please help. questions re: milk/sippy transitioning

I tried searching for answers and got lazy looking.

basically dd was drinking approx 24 oz formula and now the dr says 16-20oz milk NO More than 20oz, but dd is super cranky and I feel like I'm starving her, anyone have this problem???
my dr also says to also cut her off from the bottle that she should only drink from the sippy. I tried this and it was a disaster, she refused to drink from it (she does drink water from it) and was just a miserable baby and it has been stressing me out.

I called my ped again about this and she basically told me that I'm the one with the problem not dd Chat Icon she said if she's thirsty she will drink from it. but I dont get it, if she is throwing a tantrum before bed do I just put her to bed without her milk??? ughh.
tia for any advice Chat Icon

I'm guessing she takes 3 bottles a day. So I would give 6oz. of milk 2oz of water in the first 2 bottles.

As far as cutting the bottles totally... Try cutting the morning one first, or one that she is not using for bed/nap.

Re: stressed please help. questions re: milk/sippy transitioning

Most pediatricians recommend no more than 24 oz of whole milk. Milk is not the main source of nutrition the way that formula was during the first year.

It took about a month for DS to transition to sippy cups and to really enjoy drinking whole milk. He was doing well with drinking water from sippy cups, but wanted nothing to do with drinking milk from them. I kept working with him and offering the milk in a sippy cup. Now, I offer him one sippy cup of milk at each meal. He gets water in a sippy cup after that.

Don't get stressed out about the sippy cup. Does she drink out of a straw sippy cup? You could also try introducing milk in a different brand of cup. Keep working with her, but don't worry if it takes a while. Some kids have a harder time with the transition. Good luck! Chat Icon

Keep trying to give it to her. She CAN go to bed without milk. I know it's like a mommy stigma to have them go to bed with but it's not a necessity, so long as she is getting her nutrients by other means.

Re: stressed please help. questions re: milk/sippy transitioning

It took my DD a few months of trying with many different sippys to get her off the bottle. I kept telling her bottles were for babies and she was a big girl. She finally got off them at 18 months- on her own.
I see the same battle with my DS. He loves his paci and his bottle. I plan on phasing out both by 18 months but not before even though my ped told me no more bottles as well. I don't see the big rush.

As for the amount of milk, that I do understand since it keeps them from eating which is where they get a lot of their nutrition. DS probably drinks aobut 18 oz of milk a day and eats a lot of different stuff. I would add in a sippy of water to substitute and get him used to the sippy as well.

Re: stressed please help. questions re: milk/sippy transitioning

thanks so much everyone. So if she refuses to drink the milk from the sippy all day is it ok if she doesnt really drink any milk for the day? She is really stubborn about it and just fights me.

she doesnt get how to drink from the straw sippys yet and I giver a sippy of water at every meal but she only takes a sip here and there. I guess I will just keep trying other sippys and keep offering the milk in it.

Seems like I will just have to go through a few days of hell till she gets over it? yippy. can't wait to get rid of the paci. Chat Icon

also just wanted to add that she likes the milk so thats definitely not the issue.
